Abstract

A vehicle fuel tank cover is provided with means for triggering an audible warning 44 related to a fuel type to be used. The warning 44 is typically a verbal reminder produced by means 40 located in a fuel cap 28 which comprises a locking mechanism (10 see fig 1) and a nylon runner (12 fig 1) for easy opening. The fuel cap 28 is turned through 90{. The turning powers a dynamo 32 and triggers a switch 34 to activate the warning means 40. The cover may alternatively be a flap.

Description

PSI 1740GB Fuel Cap The present invention relates to an audible warning
system for use with a fuel tank covers, particularly with a fuel cap. s
A vehicle fuel tank is usually provided with a cap which forms a liquid tight seal with an aperture leading to the tank. The cap may be provided with a screw thread which corresponds with another thread associated with the fuel tank aperture, to hold the cap in place. The thread may be lockable, a key being required to remove the cap.
It is important that the correct type of fuel is used in a vehicle. Using the incorrect type of fuel, such as diesel in a petrol engine vehicle can cause serious damage, and at the very least requires the incorrect fuel to be drained from the fuel tank. It would be advantageous to have a warning system which advises a user which type of fuel to use.
The invention provides a fuel tank cover for a vehicle fuel tank, the cover being provided with an audible warning means to warn the user of the type of fuel to be used in the vehicle, and a trigger to activate the audible warning means. Such a cap helps to prevent the incorrect fuel being used.
Preferably, the fuel tank cover is a fuel cap. Alternatively, it may be a flap covering the fuel tank.
The trigger which activates the audible warning means is preferably activated by opening the fuel cap.
The fuel cap is preferably provided with a screw thread for attachment to the fuel tank.
The cap may be further provided with a lock, requiring a key being required to remove the cap from the fuel tank. Preferably, the trigger to activate the audible warning means is activated by either a turn of the fuel cap, or unlocking the lock of the fuel cap.
The audible warning means preferably produces a verbal warning indicating the type of fuel to be used.
The trigger to activate the audible warning means is preferably an electronic circuit S including a switch which is activated by opening the fuel cap, preferably by turning the fuel cap, or by unlocking the lock of the fuel cap. The switch may be activated either by turning a key in the lock of the fuel cap or by an interaction of the fuel cap with the fuel tank. For example the switch may be a pressure switch which is activated by a change in pressure when the fuel cap is removed from the fuel tank. Alternatively the switch may be a motion switch which is activated by turning the fuel cap.
The circuit also preferably includes a power source such as a battery or a dynamo. In a first embodiment the power source is a dynamo, which is powered by the first quarter turn of the fuel cap when it is opened.
In an alternative embodiment the power source is a battery which may be rechargeable.
Where the battery is rechargeable it is preferably recharged by movement, so that as the car is driven the battery is recharged.
The audible warning means is preferably an electronic warning means such as a voice chip. Alternatively the audible warning means may be a nonelectronic warning means.
In that case, the trigger to activate the audible warning means may be a mechanical switch, such as one activated by movement or a change in pressure.
The invention further provides a fuel tank provided with a fuel tank cover according to the invention. Also provided is a vehicle including a fuel tank provided with a fuel tank cover according to the invention.
The invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is an underplan view of the fuel cap constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the fuel cap before and after it has been opened.
Figure 3 is a block schematic diagram showing how the fuel cap works.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a fuel cap 5 including a standard locking mechanism 10 and a nylon runner 12 for easy opening of the fuel cap. The cap 5 further includes a rubber seal 14 and an outer casing 16.
As can be seen in Figure 2, the outer casing 16 is shaped to form a hand grip 18 and includes a small loud speaker 20. To remove the fuel cap 5 from the fuel tank, the hand grip 18 is turned in the direction of arrows 22.
In a preferred embodiment the outer casing 16 comprises two sections, an inner section 24, which includes the hand grip 18, and an outer section 26 which interacts with the fuel tank. In use the cap is turned in the direction of the arrows 22. For the first quarter turn the inner section 24 rotates within the outer section 26, powering a dynamo (not shown). After the first quarter turn the inner and outer sections 24 and 26 turn together, in screwing the cap from the fuel tank. The dynamo powers an audible warning means (not shown).
Figure 3 shows use of the fuel cap 28. The fuel cap 28 is turned, as indicated by arrows 30, through 90 . Turning of the fuel cap 28 powers a dynamo 32 and triggers a switch 34. The switch activates, as indicated by an arrow 36, an audible warning means 40 which is powered by the dynamo 32, as indicated by arrow 38. When the audible warning means 40 is activated, it emits as indicated by an arrow 42, an audible warning 44, a verbal indication of the fuel to be used in the fuel tank.
