Abstract

Compensation of sonar echo data, particularly from seabed surveying, stored electronically in digital format, for distortions or artifacts introduced by partial penetration of the transmitted sonar pulse into the sediment of the seabed. Compensation is effected by resampling such echo data following bottom-picking, thereby to improve the results of subsequent classification of sediment types using such echo data.
