Abstract

A conventional car jack 2-5 is operated by a DC motor 1 fed by a battery 6 which may be rechargeable or the motor may be run from the vehicle battery.

Description

Title: A Power-Assisted Car Jack
Background
The power-assisted car jack has been invented to improve on the existing mechanical jacking devices that are quite an effort to operate especially to women drivers. The fact that operating the present car jacking devices require some effort means that a power-assisted car jacking device will improve life for motorists. The inventor believes that a product of this nature will add value in the following ways: First, using a standalone power-assisted jacking device to jack a car will minimise the physical effort required, for example, for the purpose of working underneath the car or to change a tyre.
Second, this product is very light, unobtrusive, convenient and easy to use and will serve as a timely and useful improvement on the present jacking devices.
Third, it will encourage women drivers to change defective tyres very easily especially in times of real need, for example, along a motorway at night, help to a female driver especially with children onboard can take too long to come, the power assisted car jack in this circumstance will provide the much needed quick help.
Essential technical features According to the present invention, there is provided a power-assisted car jacking device that consists of a mechanical car jack of any configuration that is mechanically connected to a linear and/or a rotational power application means that is designed to provide the linear and/or rotational displacement needed to operate the car jack. The power-assisted means is for the purpose of replacing the physical effort that is required to operate the present car jacking devices and may be provided by an electric motor, a spring motor, compressed air or a hydraulic force application means.
Description
Two specific embodiments of the present invention will now be described. These are the pinpointed parallelogram and the beam/column power-assisted jacking devices respectively.
Figure I shows the front elevation of embodiment one (the pinpointed parallelogram framework braced by a lead screw) of the power-assisted car jack with an electric motor in position.
Figure 2 shows the vertical elevation of embodiment one of the powerassisted car jack, as described above, with details of the functional framing of all the component parts and the associated accessories.
Figure 3 shows the front elevation of embodiment two of the powerassisted car jack(which is the beam/column framework structure) with the power application means ( an electric motor) in place.
Figure 4 shows the vertical elevation of embodiment two of the powerassisted car jack, as already described above, with details of the functional framing of the component parts of the power-assisted application means and all associated accessories.
Considering embodiment one, figures 1 and 2 respectively show a front elevation and a vertical section through the power-assisted jacking device which consists of a pin- jointed parallelogram structure 10 that is braced by a diagonal member 2, for example, a lead screw at whose end is attached a rotational force application means, for example an electric motor 1, that is bolted to the pinpointed parallelogram structure via an end plate 9. Said electric motor may be powered by direct current feed from the car's electrical power connection means via electrical cabling lead 8 or via a battery 6 that may or may not be rechargeable. At the upper diagonal end of the pinpointed (parallelogram) structure is attached a load bearing pad 5 that serves as the jacking point for the car while at the opposite end is attached a ground bearing pad 4 that transmits the load to the ground. The pin joint connecting the ground bearing pad 4 and the rest of the structure allows in-plane rotation as a way of releasing any luckedin transverse rotational forces thereby avoiding damage during use and hence prolonging the life of the power-assisted car jack. The vertical section depicted by figure 2, reveals details of the functional framing of the component parts.
Figures 3 and 4 respectively show the front elevation and a vertical section through the embodiment two, which is a beam/column type powerassisted car jacking device.
The two figures show the main parts of the jack with the lifting point 13, the beam/column 17, the motor 18 and the switching assembly 16. They also show the ground bearing pad 20 together with the pin joint 11, the lead screw 12, the motor 14 that is encased in a plastic casing 18, electrical connection leads 19 and the battery 15.
The vertical section depicted by figure 4, reveals details of the functional framing of the component parts.
For each of the two embodiments, the electric motor could also be replaced by a spring motor, a compressed air rotational means or any other rotational power connection means. In such an event, the details of the functional framing would be adjusted appropriately.
Mode of Action To use the power jack, place it adjacent to the car in a vertical position so that the bearing pad aligns with the jacking point of the car. Run the motor forward to raise the jack's lifting component parts and hence the car or backwards to lower the jack's lifting component parts and hence the car to their respective normal positions. l
