Abstract
An apparatus for detecting vehicles carrying radioactive sources on a highway comprises a series of radioactive sensors embedded in the surface of a road and a webcam. The radioactive sensors may be Geiger counters and are used to detect the level of radiation being emitted by a passing vehicle. If the radiation level is higher than a predetermined amount an alarm may be raised and a webcam activated in order for surveillance to be undertaken.

DESCRIPTION.
Existing Technology and Infrastructure The existing traffic monitoring and control system makes use of cameras, recording equipment and telemetry methods in an established network across the country, these systems are continually monitored.
Telephone networks are primarily digital and broad band is widely available, where broadband is not available then the mobile phone network provides high speed digital communications.
Embedded web servers with connection to the telephone communications system can provide both data and camera facilities (live webcam) Detection Technology Radioactive sensors that rely on photon detection using sodium iodide or doped sodium iodide crystals and a photo- multiplier tube assembly, or sodium iodide and a photo-diode or a gas filled geiger tube are firmly established technology for detection of radioactive material. The photodevices are particularly sensitive devices for monitoring the presence of radioactivity. The method of operation required is simple pulse detection, counting pulses above a certain energy level.
Details The invention embodies the above mentioned technologies together with an embedded web server and web cam.
An array of radioactive sensors (eg 25 sensors at 1.5 metre spacing) is buried beneath the road surface at major traffic lights, road junctions and public transport entry and exit points.
Each sensor communicates its readings either by wire, fibre optic or wirelessly to a junction box which contains a specifically configured embedded web server.
This server monitors the total radioactive count from each element of the array over a predefined count time and also totals the count for the array (to cope with moving traffic).
On receiving a excessive radio active count the system outputs an alarm signal, registers the alarm on its embedded web page and starts the web cam to monitor the alarming traffic The use of the alarm data is beyond the description of this patent other than than to state it is envisaged it would be used as an input to the existing traffic monitoring and control system for use by police and security forces.
Claims (1)
- The system can be interrogated from any internet access point anywhere on the earth as long as the correct permissions are set.The data can be viewed within seconds of an alarm being recognised, traffic control can be exercised (if the alarm has been fed into the traffic system) extended counts and confirmation tests can be undertaken as required.Special web browser software can easily be written by third parties to continually poll many sites and automatically produce management reports.Configuration of the system and extended count rates The detectors are passive and present no health and safety risks.When an event occurs it can be tracked as it passes other traffic monitors along the route.
