Abstract

A method for measuring the energy content of food and/or beverages using the food and/or beverage weight as measured by a weighing device and the relative parts of water and fat in the food and/or beverages as determined by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance techniques, leaving the food and/or beverages intact and ready to be consumed.

Description

1 2400440 A method for measuring the energy content of food and. a.
Beverages using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and a weighing device
Description
Measuring the energy content of food andlor beverages (in calories or joules) is of major importance. Current methods for doing so normally involve burning the food and measuring the amount of hit emitted. The invented method is for measuring the energy content of food and/or beverages ("food" through the rest of this patent application relates to any kind of food andlor beverage), leaving them intact.
The method is based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques. Using NMR techniques, two major descriptors of the food can be measured: 1. Water content, marked as ''Rearer''. A value between O and 1, when multiplied by 100 gives the percentage of water in the food.
2. Fat content, marked as "Real". A value between O and 1, when multiplied by 100 gives the percentage of fat in the food.
Food is composed mostly of four elements with different energy contents: 1. Water, containing no energy.
2. Fat, containing 9 kilocalories per gram.
3. Proteins, containing 4 kilocalories per gram.
4. Carbohydrates, containing 4 kilocalories per gram.
Given the weight of the Food as measured by the weighing device, marked as "Weight", the energy content of the food, marked as "Energy", can be determined by: Energy = Weight Rfa' À 9 + (Weight - Weight À R,Vae, Weight À Rfa,) À 4 The result of the above formula gives the energy content of the food in kilocalories, which can be translated into other energy units.
The invented method can be implemented in a new device or added to an already existing device, used for other purposes.
The invented method may have a limit on the volume or weight of food it can process. If the volume or weight of the food is above this limit, the food will be divided into several portions, each below the volume or weight limit. Each portion will be processed using the invented method separately. Then, summing up the processing results for all the food portions will result in the overall energy content ofthe food.
For example, the invented method can be implemented as a kitchen appliance. While preparing a meal, an empty plate will be put in the appliance for weighing. The plate weight will be saved in the appliance memory. After filling the plate with food it will be put again in the appliance. The appliance will weigh the filled plate and based on the saved plate weight, the food weight will be calculated. The appliance, implementing the invented method, will measure RWaer and Rfa7 calculate the food energy content and display it. Then the plate will be taken out of the appliance with the food remains intact and ready to be consumed. r

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1. A method for measuring the energy content of food ("food"
relates to any kind of food and/or beverage) using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and a weighing device. When:
    - "Weight" is the food weight; - ''Reader', as determined by NMR is the relative part of water in the food (range between O and 1); - "Real" as determined by NMR is the relative part of fat in the food (range between O and 1); the energy content of the food, marked as "Energy" can be determined by the following formula: Energy = Weight Rfa, 9 + (Weight Weight Race, - Weight Rfa,) 4
  2. 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 which can be implemented in a new device or add to an already existing device, used for other purposes.
  3. 3. A method as claimed in claims 1 and 2 which can measure the energy content of food by dividing the food into portions, measuring each portion energy content separately and then summing up the measurement results to come up with the overall energy content of the food.
