Abstract
A transport system is provided to convey tables (4) and chairs (6) through a dining facility 22 which may be a restaurant or a canteen. The tables and chairs may be guided on one or more predetermined or preset tracks or paths which may be set into the floor. The tables and chairs may be affixed to a motorised platform (8) or carriage. Alternatively the pathway may be a line (10) marked on the surface of the floor and an optical detecting means is used for guidance purposes, or an electrical or magnetic guidance system using a metallic wire set in the floor is used. The facility may use an electronic communication system to interface between the table and a remote food / beverage ordering system or a remote billing / payment system.
Description
DINING FACILITY
The present invention relates to a dining facility and, in particular, to a dining facility which provides diners therein with a high degree of visual stimulation.
Hitherto, dining facilities such as restaurants and bars have provided diners with substantially static scenery and thus little entertainment during the course of a meal.
I have now devised an arrangement which overcomes this limitation of existing dining facilities.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a dining facility about which diners are transported, whilst seated at dining tables.
The facility can thus provide diners with a high degree of visual stimulation by varying their surrounding scenery during the course of a meal.
Preferably each dining table is arranged to follow a pre-determined route or, selectively, one or more of a plurality of pre-determined routes through the dining facility.
Most preferably each dining table is supported upon a motorised platform arranged to follow the path of a track formed on or below the surface of the floor of the facility. For example, each platform may comprise optical detecting means for following the path of a visible line marked upon the surface of the floor, or electrical or magnetic detecting mean for following the path of a metallic wire laid upon, within or below the floor.
Preferably electronic communication means associated with each table allow for the remote placing of food or beverage orders and/or for the exchange of billing information.
Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a dining table supported on a motorised platform for transporting diners about a dining facility.
Preferably the platform comprises optical detecting means for following the path of a visible line marked upon the surface of the floor, or electrical or magnetic detecting mean for following the path of a metallic wire laid upon, within or below the floor.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic, plan view of a dining facility in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, a Polynesian-themed dining facility 2 is shown, about which a plurality of tables 4 travel, each table being supported, together with a plurality of seats 6, upon a respective, motorised platform 8.
Each platform 8 comprises optical detecting means for following the path of a visible line 10 marked upon the surface of the floor, defining a plurality of possible routes through the facility which the platform may selectively follow during the course of a meal. For example, the various routes may extend through a simulated environment, such as one having a Polynesian theme.
Electronic communication means associated with each table allow for the remote placing of food and beverage orders by, and for the exchange of billing information with, diners being transported through the facility.
The facility thus described provides diners with a high degree of visual stimulation by varying their surrounding scenery during the course of a meal.
