Abstract
239,862. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Libby, S. H.). Sept. 10, 1924, [Convention date]. Disc; electric and magnetic; energy-absorbing elements.-The rotary elements of a multipledisc brake each comprise a pair of plates secured together by pins and spaced apart by a plurality of separators which serve to circulate a cooling medium over the disc as it rotates. As shown in Fig. 1, pairs of brake discs 12, 13 and 14, 15, which rotate with the shaft 16 to be braked but are slidable longitudinally thereof, are provided with separators or fins 20 which circulate air between the discs as the latter rotate. The discs are adapted to co-operate, to brake the shaft, with a disc 19 and the armature 17 cf an electromagnet 10, which are held against rotation by a bolt 18, but are slidable longitudinally of the shaft 16. When the electromagnet ie energized, the armature is moved to the left against the action of the spring 11 and the dises are eased to the left to permis the shaft to run freely, whilst, when the electromagnet is de-energized, the spring 11 moves the armature 17 to the right to bring the rotary and fixed disc into engagement to brake the shaft.
