Abstract
239,677. Kirtane, M. M. Aug. 13, 1924. Periscopes.-An optical system for a submarine periscope whereby a complete panorama is projected on to a cylindrical screen comprises in combination a top cylindrical prism 1, which is a solid of revolution formed by the rotation of a right-angled triangle about one of its acute angles, and a similar bottom prism 19, the surface 21 of which is curved. Rays from surrounding objects are reflected by the prisms 1, 19 through the curved surface 21 to form a cylindrical image on the screen 22 supported from the deck 15 by rods 23. The upper prism is mounted in a tube 10 so that it may be raised or lowered at will. The screen 22 may be graduated in degrees and marked with the fore and aft line of the submarine. In a modification shown in the left-hand portion of Fig. 2 the surface of the lower prism is straight in vertical section, the image being formed by lenses in the vertical portion of the periscope.
