Abstract
An imaging system which provides a vehicle driver with images approximately perpendicular to the direction of travel of the vehicle in the region of the front bumper. The system comprises wide-angle TV cameras (bc, fig 2) mounted in the front bumper or front wings of the vehicle which relay left and right images to a flat screen TV (S, fig 3) mounted in the driver's sun visor. The system has particular use in negotiating road junctions safely, providing the driver with images of road conditions to the left and right of the junction before entering the carriageway.

o BUMPER CAMERA
This invention relates to a Bumper Camera.
Todays roads are very crowded and urban street parking can be a problem. This is because of the limited amount, hence every usable space is occupied, even close up to road Junctions.
This then can cause problems to vehicles exiting from side roads on to main roads, due to the limited vision caused by parked cars.
Numerous accidents are caused by vehicles attempting this manoeuvre without adequate visibility of traffic approaching from both sides.
This invention provides means to see down a main road from a side road junction, by the use of two wide angle lens TV cameras. The cameras are mounted and moulded within the front bumper of the vehicle, one on the left and one on the right. These cameras look in a direction at approximately 90 degrees to the direction of travel.
The cameras transmit pictures to a small flat screen TV, mounted inside the vehicle on the back side of the drivers sun visor.
At a poor visibility sanction, the driver can pull down the sun visor, activate the cameras, which will give him information to negotiate the junction safely. The visor can then be returned to the up position.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a typical poor visibility junction.
Figure 2 camera position.
Figure 3 shows TV position.
Referring to fig I the driver of vehicle (C) has a restricted view at junction due to parked cars (P). However travelling cars (T) can be observed within field of view (f) of Bumper
Cameras. The Bumper Cameras (be) are mounted as shown in fig 2 The TV screen (s) is mounted as shown in fig 3 on the back of the sun visor. It is push button operated and shows a view from the left, and one from the right.
Claims (1)
- o CLA1IUSA traffic monitoring system for use when exiting from a road at a junction with restricted visibility. TV cameras are mounted in the vehicles front bwnper,or wings' one looking left and one looking right. These cameras transmit information to a TV screen mounted at the rear of the drivers sun visor allowing the driver to negotiate the junction safely.
