Abstract

239,463. Saoutchik, J. June 2. 1925. Sliding-window opening and closing apparatus; vehicle windows.-For raising and lowering window members, particularly the rear windows of all-weather cars and like vehicles, two adjacent frame members are adapted to slide together when operated by transmission gear so that one window member moves at about twice the speed of the other until, when the movable members are in the closed position, they are slightly overlapping mid-way of the height of the window. The mechanism for operating a pair of sliding windows is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The windows overlap at A, B when in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 6. The panes are carried by side bars 4, 5 movable in guides 2, and they are operable by a hand-operated cross shaft 8 which gears through pinions 9 with racks 11 on the member 4. On the upper ends of the members 4 are pinions 12 which gear with stationary racks on the window framing, and these pinions are in gear with racks 14 on the members 5. As the window frame is moved upwardly, the pinions 12 are rotated by engagement with the stationary racks and the window members 5 are thus lifted at a quicker rate until the position shown in Fig. 6 is reached. The parts are locked at the required height by a rotary locking member (not shown). The recess in which the sliding windows are housed in the vehicle body is closed by a narrow lid 17 hinged at 18, as shown in Fig. 8.
