Abstract

The crash barrier comprises a number of concrete-filled tires which are linked together using chain, coils of steel wire or straps. A number of rows may be placed one on top of another and the tires may be painted different colours and/or have plants planted in them.

Description

!. Pare 2394496 J A POOLE ROAD CASH BARRIER
This invention purports the use of environmentally unfriendly material for the purpose of minimising fatalities on roadway accidents.
The use of empty automobile tyres on grand prix circuits is well known and because the speeds are in excess four times that of road users these tyres are loosely stacked so that on impact they are strewn widely but in so doing absorb the impact of the race car. This impact is at least sixteen times higher than that on roadways because the speed is up to four times higher and the force of impact rises as the square of the relevant speed But, on the roadway it will be dangerous for tyres to be flung in all directions and, therefore, by making a chain of concrete- filled tyres the impact will be distributed along the chain thereby preventing objects from flying into the path of oncoming traffic.
These concrete-filled tyres are placed on the surface on the side of the road and are typically linked with a devise of ample strength such as a chain, a coil of steel wire or a strap as shown in the plan view of the drawing on page 2. More rows can be added on top of the first row to any desired height as shown on the side elevation of the drawing on page 2. To add more weight to the chain the voids within the tyres may be filled with soil and to enhance the scenery suitable plants may be planted in them. Because such a long black wall will not be attractive the tyres may be painted in various colours perhaps to the joy of graffiti artists
