Abstract

A connector assembly comprises a flexible circlip 1 with lugs [2, Figure 1] formed on either arm [5, Figure 1]; and a tapered key piece 8. The circlip 1 is located and held in use, within a shaped recess [3, Figure 3] formed in a surface of a first panel [4, Figure 3] such that the arms protrude from the recess so that they may pass through and engage an aperture 6 provided in a second panel 7. The lugs on the arms overlap the edge of the aperture. The tapered key 8 is then inserted into the space between the arms 5 locking the arms 5 and the lugs so that they cannot be removed from the aperture 6. The circlip is preferably made from a semi-rigid thermoplastic.

Description

MEANS OF ASSEMBLY - BOZZ 2
This invention relates to a means of right angle assembly between two solid plane surfaces.
Quick assembly or " Knock down "assembly systems are well known and popular means for erecting furniture and other structures. Most such systems require the use of tools in the assembly process and require a degree of skill and judgement on the part of the operative.
It is to the above that the present invention provides a resolution.
According to the present invention there is provided a means of assembly wherein a flexible circlip is configured with lugs facilitating location in a preconfigured and / or machined receptacle set into the edge of one of the solid planes to be joined the said flexible circlip is provided with projecting arms at the ends of the "C" which allow the said flexible circlip to have its overall size temporarily reduced by the operator manually squeezing the said projecting arms together so to allow the said flexible circlip to be located in the said preconfigured and / or machined receptacle then to allow the said projecting arms to be released such that the said flexible circle regains its original shape within the said preconfigured and / or machined receptacle and consequently the said flexible circlip is securely located within the said preconfigured and / or machined receptacle the said projecting arms of the said flexible circlip are passed through a preconfigured and / or machined slot in the second of the solid planes to be joined "hereafter the said projecting arms are driven apart by the introduction of a tapered key piece between the two said projecting
arms whereupon locking lugs configured onto the ends of the said projecting arms overlap the ends of the said preconfigured and / or machined slot in the second of the solid planes so to lock the assembly together.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures I, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 show the assembly sequence in both perspective and plan.
Referring to the drawings the means of assembly comprises a flexible circlip I [ preferably manufactured in a semi rigid thermoplastic acetal resin or similar] configured with lugs 2, Fig I facilitating location in a mating preconfigured and / or machined receptacle 3 set into the edge of one of the solid planes 4 to be joined, Fig 3 the said flexible circlip I is provided with projecting arms 5 at the ends of the defining "C"shape which allow the said flexible circlip I to have its overall size temporarily reduced by the operator manually squeezing the said projecting arms 5 together, Fig2 so to allow the said flexible circlip I to be located in the said preconfigured and / or machined receptacle 3, Fig 4 then to allow the said projecting arms 5 to be released such that the said flexible circlip I regains its original shape within the said preconfigured and / or machined receptacle 3 and consequently the said flexible circlip I is securely located within the said preconfigured and / or machined receptacle 3, Fig 5 the said projecting arms 5 of the said flexible circlip I are passed through a preconfigured and / or machined slot 6 in the second of the solid planes 7 to be joined, Fig 6 where after the said projecting arms 5 are driven apart by the introduction of a
tapered key piece 8 [ preferably manufactured in a semi rigid thermoplastic acetal resin or similar] between the two said projecting arms 5, Fig 7 whereupon locking lugs 9 configured onto the ends of the said projecting arms 5 overlap the ends 10 of the said preconfigured and / or machined slot 6 in the second of the solid planes 7 so to lock the assembly together, Figs 8, 9.

Claims (2)

1 A means by which two solid plane surfaces are assembled together wherein a flexible circlip [ preferably manufactured in a semi rigid thermoplastic acetal resin or similar] is configured with lugs facilitating location in a mating preconfigured and / or machined receptacle set into the edge of one of the solid planes to be joined the said flexible circlip is provided with projecting arms at the ends of the defining "C"shape which allow the said flexible circlip to have its overall size temporarily reduced by the operator manually squeezing the said projecting arms together so to allow the said flexible circlip to be located in the said Reconfigured and / or machined receptacle then to allow the said projecting arms to be released such that the said flexible circlip regains its original shape within the said Reconfigured and / or machined receptacle consequently the said flexible circlip is securely located within the said Reconfigured and / or machined receptacle the said projecting arms of the said flexible circlip are passed through a Reconfigured and / or machined slot in the second of the solid planes to be joined "hereafter the said projecting arms are driven apart by the introduction of a tapered key piece [ preferably
manufactured in a semi rigid thermoplastic acetal resin or similar] between the two said projecting arms whereupon locking lugs configured onto the ends of the said projecting arms overlap the ends of the said Reconfigured and / or machined slot in the second of the solid planes so to lock the assembly together.
2 A claim as in claim I wherein the circlip and / or the key piece retain their functionality but have an aesthetically varied shape
