Description

2391 856
1 "Font" 3 The present invention provides an improved font for 4 use in the dispensing of beverages. More 5 specifically, the present invention provides a font 6 for use particularly, but not exclusively, in the 7 dispensing of alcoholic drinks and soft drinks 8 through multi-tap dispensing apparatus.
10 Fonts for use in the dispensing of alcoholic drinks 11 have been traditionally used in public houses and 12 other establishments to dispense beverages such as 13 beer and lager for sale. Such fonts are generally 14 mounted on bar tops and contain a tap, or a 15 plurality of taps, which are used to dispense the 16 beverage.
18 The font not only serves as a mounting for the tap, 19 but also conceals the tubing used to deliver the 20 beverage from its storage location, such as a barrel 21 or keg, to the tap.
1 Traditionally such fonts assume two main forms, that 2 of a metal construction and those of a plastic form.
3 Fonts of metal construction are generally 4 constructed of brass or the like, with the metal 5 finish giving the font a traditional aesthetic 6 appearance. Such metal fonts usually form a "T-bar" 7 shape which allows multiple dispensing taps to be 8 mounted onto the font, these taps being used to 9 dispense a range of products.
11 Plastics fonts are used where a more eye catching 12 and less traditional presentation of the font is 13 required, for example such plastic fonts often 14 incorporate a sign plate which can be illuminated, 15 the sign plate exhibiting a branding or logo.
16 Although such fonts can be used for multi-tap 17 dispensing, generally an individual font is used for 18 each individual product to be dispensed.
20 Such fonts as described have the disadvantage that 21 their design and manufacture inevitably results in 22 the shape and aesthetics of the font being initially 23 designed, this resulting in the internal workings 24 and components of the font having to effectively be 25 retro-fitted during a secondary design stage.
27 Such "post design" modifications include in 28 particular the incorporation into the internal body 29 of the font of the tubing used to deliver the liquid 30 to be dispensed to the tap.
1 The tubing used to conduct the beverage flow has an 2 important role in the delivery of the product to the 3 tap from where it is to be dispersed. The external 4 environmental conditions which the tubing is exposed 5 to has a direct effect on the quality of the product 6 which is served to the consumer.
8 In particular, the temperature at which the beverage 9 is served should be carefully controlled. It is 10 typically desirable to keep the beverage at a cool ll temperature prior to serving, and in particular at a 12 temperature which is less than the ambient 13 temperature of the room where it is to be serverd.
14 Accordingly, it is known in the art to provide 15 insulation about the beverage conduction tubing in 16 order to reduce temperature changes of the beverage 17 whilst it is contained within the tubing.
19 However, the fitting of tubing into fonts where the 20 external appearance and aesthetics have already been 21 designed can serve to compromise the insulation 22 fitted about the tubing. This in turn can have an 23 adverse effect on the temperature and therefore the 24 quality of the beverage when it is dispensed.
26 Further, in fonts used to facilitate multi-tap 27 dispensing of beverages, there may be several 28 lengths of tubing required to be contained within 29 the font. Restrictions in the internal capacity 30 within the inner body of the font can again 31 therefore compromise the insulation and path of the 32 tubing within the font.
2 Frequently the tubing is insulated by a foam which 3 assists in preventing temperature changes in the 4 beverage prior to it being dispensed.
5 Alternatively, a central manifold constructed of 6 foam can be used as a filling within the internal 7 cavity of the font. Such a structure mitigates the 8 requirement for each tube within the font to be 9 individually insulated. The foam manifold can also 10 act as a skeleton to which an outer cladding can be 11 attached, this cladding being of metal or plastic 12 construction. In such instances however, the 13 manifold is designed to be accommodated within the 14 outer cladding or font unit.
16 There is now provided an improved font for use in 17 the dispensing of beverages, the font being 18 substantially composed of a foam material. The foam 19 material is designed such that it has an inner 20 portion which accommodates the tubing for conducting 21 the flow of the beverage to be dispensed and further 22 exhibits an attractive outer appearance and shape.
24 According to the present invention there is provided 25 a font for use in the dispensing of beverages, the 26 font being substantially composed of a foam 27 material.
29 Preferably the foam is polyurethane foam 31 Alternatively the foam is any foam which confers an 32 insulating function and which has a sufficient
1 structural integrity that tubing can be contained 2 therein and a dispensing tap can be disposed thereon 3 without compromising said structural integrity.
5 Preferably the font may include a mounting for 6 detachably mounting decorating or display 7 information thereon.
9 Preferably the font has at least one beverage 10 dispensing tap disposed thereon.
12 Alternatively the font has a plurality of beverage 13 dispensing taps disposed thereon.
15 Optionally, the font may include a sign plate which 16 can be illuminated by a light source contained 17 within the font.
19 A further aspect of the present invention provides a 20 font for use in the dispensing of beverages, the 21 font being substantially composed of a first inner 22 layer, which is substantially comprised of a foam 23 material, and a second outer coating layer applied 24 to the outer surface of the inner layer, the outer 25 coating layer being of a harder composition than the 26 inner layer and forming a protective coating on said 27 inner layer.
29 Preferably the font is adapted to receive at least 30 one tap for dispensing a beverage therefrom.
1 Alternatively the font is adapted to receive a 2 plurality of taps for dispensing a beverage 3 therefrom.
5 Preferably the inner foam layer is polyurethane 6 foam.
8 Alternatively the inner foam layer is any foam which 9 confers an insulating function on the beverage 10 containing tubing.
12 Preferably the outer protective layer is comprised 13 of any substance selected from the group including, 14 but not limited to; a vacuum formed sheet, 15 fibreglass, epoxy, composites or the like.
17 Alternatively the outer protective layer comprises a 18 spray coated or painted layer.
20 Alternatively the outer protective layer is dip 21 coated onto the inner surface layer.
23 A yet further example of the present invention 24 provides a process of making a drinks font composed 25 of an insulating material, said process comprising 26 the steps of; 27 - casting a foam material, the foam material 28 being adapted to have beverage containing 29 tubing contained therein and at least one 30 beverage dispensing tap to be disposed 31 thereon
1 - optionally applying a coating to the outer 2 surface of the foam material 3 - applying a desired aesthetic finish to the 4 foam, or outer coating.
6 Preferably the foam layer is polyurethane foam.
8 Alternatively the foam layer is any foam which 9 confers an insulating function on the beverage 10 containing tubing.
12 Preferably the outer coating layer is comprised of 13 any substance selected from the group containing, 14 but not limited to; a vacuum formed sheet, 15 fibreglass, epoxy, composites or the like.
17 Alternatively the outer coating layer comprises a 18 spray coated or painted layer.
20 Alternatively the outer coating layer is dip coated 21 onto the inner layer.
23 Preferably the font is adapted to receive at least 24 one tap for use in dispensing beverages.
26 Alternatively the font is adapted to receive 27 multiple taps for use in dispensing beverages.
29 A yet further aspect of the present invention 30 provides a removable cover for attachment to the 31 font of the present invention.
1 Preferably when the cover is attached to the font, 2 the total exposed surface of the font is covered by 3 the cover.
5 Alternatively, the cover is attached only to part of 6 the font.
8 Preferably the cover is used to display information 9 or other visual matter to be communicated.
11 The present invention will now be described, by way 12 of example only, with reference to the accompanying 13 drawings, in which; 15 Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a font for 16 use in the multi-tap dispense of beverages, 18 Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a font for 19 use in the single tap dispense of beverages, and 21 Figure 3 shows a cover suitable for attachment 22 to a font of the present invention.
25 Figure 1 shows a font which is adapted to receive a 26 plurality of taps for dispensing beverages. The 27 font (10) is constructed of an inner foam layer and 28 an outer protective coating, which serves to impart 29 a robust and impact resistant finish onto the foam.
31 The font assumes a substantially "T" shape, it 32 should be noted however that the foam material used
g 1 to construct the font would not limit the font to 2 such a shape and in fact, almost any desired shape 3 could be formed by the foam. Dispensing taps (12) 4 are distributed evenly along the horizontal portion 5 of the "T" font. The tubing for use in directing 6 the flow of the beverage to the tap enters the font 7 at the bottom on the vertical portion of the font 8 and is directed up through specific internal 9 channels (14) to a particular tap. As the font is 10 composed of a foam material, no further insulation 11 is required about the tubing.
13 In use, the front facing and rear facing faces of 14 the font serve different roles. The rear facing 15 surfaces (16) have the beverage dispensing taps 16 fitted thereto. This face is not generally viewable 17 by the consumer and is seen by the operator of the 18 font while beverage is dispensed from the tap. A 19 drip tray to similar may be attached or associated 20 with a lower portion of the rear facing surface.
22 The front facing surface is directly exposed to the 23 consumer. This surface is of particular visual 24 importance as the aesthetics applied thereto will be 25 directly visible to the consumer due to the 26 orientation and fixing of a font to the bar.
28 In fonts, where generally shape of the font does not 29 lend to the depiction of front and rear faces, an 30 approximation of the surface area which forms the 31 front (consumer) facing and rear (operator) facing 32 surface can be made.
2 The front (consumer) facing part of the font is, as 3 discussed above, of particular importance in that 4 the colouring, decoration or aesthetics applied 5 thereon are seen by the consumer. The present 6 invention has the advantage that a large number of 7 visual effects can be created upon the surface of 8 the foam, or where present, the foam coating layer.
10 The flexibility accorded by the foam or coating 11 surface due to it being so receptive to different 12 types of finishes allows almost any visual effect to 13 be produced on the font. This would include, but 14 not be limited to; a painted effect, a marble 15 effect, a polished metal effect such as brass, a 16 matt metal effect such as brushed aluminium and a 17 fluorescent painted effect.
19 Where the surface is painted, this allows any form 20 of colouring, writing, logo or branding to be 21 applied to the surface of the font.
23 Alternatively where the finish is for example, a 24 metallic effect, this can be used to co-ordinate the 25 colouring and design of the font with the rest of 26 the design "theme" of the bar or restaurant where it 27 is installed.
29 Figure 2 shows a further embodiment of a font, which 30 exhibits only a single beverage dispensing tap (20).
31 In this embodiment, the font is comprised of a foam 32 construction. A beverage dispensing tap (22) is
1 fitted to an upper portion of the font, and the 2 tubing which conducts beverage to the tap is located 3 within the body of the font, and is insulated by the 4 foam, of which the font is constructed.
6 A paint coating is applied directly to the foam to 7 provide an attractive visual appearance to the font.
9 In embodiments of the present invention, where the 10 font is constructed solely of a foam material, or 11 optionally where the foam material is covered only 12 by a coating, a removable cover or the like could be 13 applied to the font.
15 The application of such a removable cover allows the 16 aesthetic appearance of the font to be dictated by 17 the pattern, colour or information which is present 18 on the surface of the cover. An example of such a I 19 cover is shown in figure 3, where a cover (30) 20 suitable for attaching to the font of figure 2 is 21 shown.
23 The cover would generally be of a plastics material 24 and would be capable of being removably attached to 25 the font. The cover could be applied to the whole, 26 or a specific part of the font.
28 The ability to remove and change covers allows a 29 wide range of visual and aesthetic effects to be 30 exhibited by the font. For example, a cover may 31 bear writing or logos which serve to advertise and 32 promote a particular brand of beverage on sale on
1 the premises. Alternatively the cover may bear 2 information regarding event or consumer offers, or 3 may be coloured or styled to blend in with a 4 particular theme being created within the bar, 5 restaurant or other site of font installation.
7 In each case above, the location and prominence 8 afforded by the covers, particularly as they are 9 fitted to the fonts, results in maximum visual 10 impact on the consumer who would see the font and 11 the information communicated by the cover fitted 12 thereto when in proximity to the bar, or beverage 13 serving area.
15 The fonts described may be further modified to 16 enhance the aesthetic appearance of them through the 17 incorporation into the font of an integral 18 illuminated fascia, which will serve as a display 19 portion. This display portion can further display 20 information to be depicted to the consumer, such as 21 a brand name of logo. Further the illumination 22 provided by such an element could also be used to 23 enhanced the visual effect produced when a temporary 24 cover is applied to the font.
26 Further, it may also be desirable to incorporate 27 within the font a plastics or other type of sign 28 plate which could be illuminated by a light source 29 such as a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL).
31 Although the font has been substantially described 32 with reference to the dispensing of alcoholic
1 beverages such as lager and beer, the font of the 2 present invention could also be used in the 3 dispensing of soft drinks and in particular 4 carbonated soft drinks, where the insulation 5 provided by the foam construction of the font will 6 again result in a dispensed product of improved 7 quality.
9 Further, the font of the present invention could 10 also be used not just in the dispensing of 11 beverages, but in the dispensing of any liquid or 12 flowable preparation, for example, liquid soaps, 13 food sauces and the like. Where the font of the 14 present invention is to dispense a food sauce, the 15 font may be shaped into for example, a tomato shape 16 and would be used to dispense tomato ketchup.
18 While various embodiments of the invention have been I 19 described, it will be apparent to those skilled in 20 the art once given this disclosure that various
21 modifications, changes, improvements and variations 22 may be made without departing from the scope of the 23 invention.
