Abstract

A device for raising a handicapped person from the sitting position to a substantially standing position comprises a telescopically extendable mast 4, 10 and a tape or cord 8 that is positioned over a series of rollers or pulleys 12,13,14 between the extendable 10 and static portions 4 of the mast and on to an attachment point 15 on the static portion of the mast. The extendable portion of the mast 10 is moved by an actuator 9 supported on the static portion and is attached to the extendable portion at point 11. The free end of the tape or cord is attached to a harness 7 for supporting a patient, although other body supporting means could be used as alternative to the harness. The device, mounted on wheels 1, has also a small platform 3, a shin support 5 and a handle support 6.

DESCRIPTION
- The use of mechanical means for lifting a patient from the sitting to the standing position is well known. The present invention relates to improvements to such a device. In order that the invention may be better understood reference will now be made to the attached drawings.
5 The device is mounted on four castors ( I) to allow easy movement to the required position. The base legs (2) can be fixed or may be of the opening type. A foot plate (3) is provided close to the ground for the patients feet. A near vertical static mast (4) is attached to the base. Attached directly to the static mast (4) is a shin pad (5) which serves to restrain the patients lower legs.
10 Also attached to the static mast (4) is a patient hand support (6). A harness (7) is placed around the patient. The lifting tape (8) is used to pull the patient upwards and forwards.
An electric actuator (9) is attached to the static mast and to the central extendable mast (10) at attachment point (l l) such that when the actuator (9) 15 is extended in length the central extendable mast (10) will rise up from within the static mast (4). Damage to the central extendable mast (l 0) is reduced by rollers or anti scuff pads (16).
The tape (8) passes over the first roller (12) mounted on the central extendable mast (10), then over the second roller (13) mounted on the static mast (4), then 20 over the third roller (14) mounted on the central extendable mast (10), then to an attachment point (15) on the static mast (4.

by Fig #(1) shows the actuator (9) in the fully closed position and the patient in the sitting position. When the actuator (9) is extended in length the central extendable mast (10) rises upwards taking the first roller (12) and the third 25 roller (14) with it. Because of the path of the tape (8) it moves the harness (7) a distance of about four times that of the actuator (9).
Pig 2 shows the actuator (9) in its fully extended position along with the patient in the standing position.
The effect of the device is to provide a pulling / lifting action on the patient 30 such that the lifting effect is increased as the patient is raised.
Accordingly to the present invention comprises a device for raising a handicapped person from the sitting position to a substantially standing position and comprising in combination a tape (8) that is positioned over a series of rollers (12) (13) (14) to an attachment point (15), said roller (13) and 35 attachment point being attached to a static mast (4) and said rollers (12) (14) being attached to a central extendable mast ( 10), said central extendable mast (10) being capable of being extended upwards by means of the actuator (9) which is attached to it at attachment point ( 11) and to the static mast, the free end of said tape (8) being attached to a harness (7) which is in turn attached to 40 the patient, the overall effect of said device is the lifting of the patient by raising the first roller (12) effecting a slow raising of the patient pulling point as the patient is raised.
