Abstract
A device for raising a handicapped person from the sitting position to a substantially standing position comprises a shin support 5 that is pivotable from a substantially vertical position to a substantially up facing horizontal position so as to be able to fully support the weight of the patient and it also comprises a hand support 6 for assisting the raising action of the patient, which is positioned so that the patient exerts on it a substantially downward and forward force in order to assist the raising. The device also comprises a telescopically extendable mast 4, 10 and a tape or cord 8 that is positioned over a series of rollers or pulleys 12,13,14 between the extendable 10 and static portions 4 of the mast and on to an attachment point 15 on the static portion of the mast. The extendable portion of the mast 10 is moved by an actuator 9 supported on the static portion and is attached to the extendable portion at point 11. The free end of the tape or cord is attached to a harness 7 for supporting a patient, although other body supporting means could be used as alternative to the harness. The device, mounted on wheels 1 and has a small platform 3.

DE SC RII,TION
The use of mechanical means for lifting a patient from the sitting to the standing position is well known. The present invention relates to improvements to such a device. In order that the invention may be better understood reference will now be made to the attached drawings.
5 The device is mounted on four castors (1) to allow easy movement to the required position. The base legs (2) can be fixed or may be of the opening type. A foot plate (3) is provided close to the ground for the patients feet. A near vertical static mast (4) is attached to the base. Attached directly to the static mast (4) is a shin pad (5) which serves to restrain the patients lower legs.
10 Also attached to the static mast (4) is a patient hand support (6). A harness (7) is placed around the patient. The lifting tape (8) is used to pull the patient upwards and forwards.
An electric actuator (9) is attached to the static mast and to the central extendable mast (10) at attachment point (11) such that when the actuator (9) 15 is extended in length the central extendable mast (10) will rise up from within the static mast (4). Damage to the central extendable mast (10) is reduced by rollers or anti scuff pads (16).
The tape (8) passes over the first roller (12) mounted on the central extendable mast (10), then over thsecond roller (13) mounted on the static mast (4), then 20 over the third roller (14) mounted on the central extendable mast (10), then to an attachment point (15) on the static mast (4).
Fig #( I) shows the actuator (9) in the fully closed position and the patient in the sitting position. When the actuator (9) is extended in length the central extendable mast (to) rises upwards taking the first roller (12) and the third 25 roller ( l 4) with it. Because of the path of the tape (8) it moves the harness (7) a distance of about four times that of the actuator (9).
Fig 2 shows the actuator (9) in its fully extended position along with the patient in the standing position.
The effect of the device is to provide a pulling t lifting action on the patient 30 such that the liming effect is increased as the patient is raised.
The patient hand support (6) is positioned such that it extends to a much lower position than would normally be expected. This feature allows the patient to push on it in a more natural action (as asociated with a walking stick or walking frame) during the lifting action.
35 The shin pad (5) is designed to rotate from the near vertical position as shown in Figures l and 2 to the near horizontal position as shown in Pig 3. This feature allows the patient to take all or some of the body weight on the shin and below the knee joint. In the condition where all the weight is taken on the shin support (6) the feet may be lifted from the ground.
40 The rotation of the shin pad (5) may be clamped by mechanical means in any obtainable position (clamp not shown in drawings). Further the angle of rotation of the shin pad (5) may be mechanically restricted using adjustable stops (not shown on drawings).
Accordingly the present invention relates to a device for raising a 45 handicapped person from the sitting position to a substantially standing position and comprising in combination a shin pad (5) that can be rotated from 238ZoO3Adoc ED08/08/2002 1451 PD08/08/2002 145] Page3of5
the vertical or near vertical positions to the horizontal or near horizontal position, said shin pad being capable of restraining the patient when it is in the vertical or near vertical position and taking the patients weight when in the 50 horizontal or near horizontal position, said shin pad (5) being used in combination with a hand support (6) that is positioned in a relatively low position enabling the patient to exert a generally downward and forward pressure on it.
