Abstract

A device for clamping a device or signalling equipment having a magnet to a rail in a railway comprises a single clamp having a telescopic arm. In use a fixed portion 4 carries the equipment and interfaces with a movable portion 3. The clamp device is located beneath the rail, with the rail being gripped between the pawls 2 and 3. The distal end pawl 3 may be spring loaded and biased to the closed or clamped position. The clamp may be provided with a locking mechanism 10, which holds the clamp shut around the rail. The equipment may be a speed restriction device or a track magnet and may be housed in a fibre glass housing or protected by rubber pads facing the oncoming traffic. In one embodiment the device may be used as part of a temporary speed restriction track unit. In a further embodiment it may be part of a warning system.

Description

TEMPORARY SPEED RESTRICTION TRACK UNIT
5 The present invention relates to a temporary speed restriction track unit for use on railways.
Conventionally, a train driver is given published route information containing details of speed restrictions. However, sometimes due to urgent 10 maintenance work or due to an incident or accident on the line, it is necessary to set up a temporary speed restriction ("TSR") on the track. This is done by placing a magnet on the track between the rails. The magnet interacts with a warning and optionally automatic 15 braking system in the driver's cab. When the train passes over the magnet an audible and/or visual warning may be given to the driver in the cab. An emergency warning board may also be positioned along the track to give the driver advance visual warning.
20 A known temporary speed restriction track unit comprises a magnet which is positioned centrally between two rails. The temporary speed restriction track unit has two arms and each arm is secured to a rail. The known temporary speed restriction track unit is awkward 25 to attach to the two rails and in order to place the unit the ballast by both rails must be excavated. It can take two engineers several hours to position and secure the known unit. Furthermore, since a power rail is often present, there is a danger of electrocution to 30 the engineers since the rail adjacent the power rail must be excavated.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a temporary speed restriction track unit comprising a magnet and a single 35 clamp for clamping to a rail of a railway line so that the unit is only attached to one rail of the railway line. The temporary speed restriction track unit
according to the preferred embodiment represents a significant improvement over the known unit it that it is much quicker, easier and safer to install. By using a single clamp mechanism the unit can be placed quickly 5 on the track without having to excavate both sides of the rail. Such an arrangement allows the temporary speed restriction track unit to be placed within a matter of minutes compared to the known unit which can take several hours to position. The temporary speed 10 restriction track unit according to the preferred = embodiment can also be positioned whilst working entirely away from a power rail and without there being any need for an engineer to work in close proximity to the power rail. The preferred unit is therefore 15 significantly safer to install.
Preferably, the unit is arranged to be positioned approximately centrally between two rails. The single clamp may comprise a fixed portion and a movable portion, and the movable portion may be sprung loaded 20 and biased towards the fixed portion. A locking mechanism may be used to lock the clamp to the rail.
The magnet preferably has a magnetic flux density > 70 Gauss, 2 100 Gauss, > 150 Gauss, > 200 Gauss, or > 220 Gauss which is greater than known track magnets.
25 Preferably the magnet is housed in a protective fibre glass housing and/or one or more rubber blocks may be used to protect the magnet.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a railway warning system 30 comprising: a housing having a body portion housing a magnet and a single arm attached to the body portion at a proximal end and having a spring loaded clamp mechanism at the distal end for attachment to the rail of a 35 railway line.
A locking means may be used to lock or otherwise secure the clamp mechanism to the rail.
According to a third aspect of the present
- 3 invention, there is provided a method of installing a warning device on to a railway line, comprising: clamping a temporary speed restriction track unit comprising a magnet and a single clamp to a rail of a 5 railway line.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a temporary speed restriction track unit wherein the temporary speed restriction track unit is only attached to one rail of a 10 railway line.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a track magnet having a body portion and a single arm portion for attachment to a single rail of a railway line.
15 According to a sixth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a track magnet assembly for interacting with a warning system in a train driver's cab, the track magnet assembly having only one clamp means for clamping the track magnet assembly to a rail 20 of a railway line.
Preferably, the clamp means comprises a telescopic arm, further preferably comprising a fixed portion and a movable portion, the movable portion preferably sliding within the fixed portion or on the fixed portion. The 25 movable portion is preferably spring biased.
The temporary speed restriction track unit is preferably locked or secured by a bolt which prevents further movement of a telescopic arm which forms one part of the clamp mechanism.
30 According to a seventh aspect of the present invention, there is provided a temporary speed restriction track unit for interacting with a warning system in a train, the temporary speed restriction track unit comprising: 35 a fibre glass housing having a magnet assembly therein; a single clamp for securing the housing to just one rail and for positioning the magnet assembly in the
- 4 - middle of two rails; and means for locking the clamp to the rail.
A particularly preferred feature of the present invention is that the magnet may have a magnetic flux 5 density greater than conventional track magnets which have a standard strength of 60 Gauss. Strengths of 220 Gauss may be used, particularly when the magnets are to be placed on track wherein trains may travel at speeds of 80-100 mph (128-160 km/h).
10 Various embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. l(a) shows a side view of a temporary speed restriction track unit according to an embodiment of the 15 present invention and Fig. l(b) shows a plan view of the unit; and Fig. 2(a) shows a side view of a particularly preferred temporary speed restriction track unit being located in position and Fig. 2(b) shows a side view of 20 the unit having been fixed in position.
A temporary speed restriction track unit 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention is shown in Fig. 1. The temporary speed restriction track unit 1 has a single arm 4 with a clamping mechanism at 25 one end The clamping mechanism comprises a fixed portion 2 and a movable portion 3. The movable portion 3 is preferably spring loaded and biased towards the fixed portion 2.
The unit 1 is attached to the foot of a running 30 rail and positioned squarely in the middle of the two rails forming the railway track. The unit 1 may be locked in position with a key and/or padlock.
The unit 1 comprises a magnet assembly 5 which is arranged to be positioned in use in between the two 35 rails. The magnet assembly 5 may be protected in the direction of travel of the train by rubber blocks 6 on each side of the magnet assembly 5 as shown in Fig. l(b).
- 5 The unit 1 is approximately 950 mm long x 189 mm high and weighs approximately 2S kg. The movable clamp portion 3 is approximately lQ0 mm wide.
A particularly preferred embodiment is shown in 5 Fig. 2. According to this embodiment, a magnet assembly 7 is provided within a fibre glass protective housing 8.
The housing 8 extends to a clamping mechanism which is preferably either similar to or identical with the clamping mechanism 2,3 shown in Fig. 1. A latch 9 may 10 be used to release and/or extend movable portion 3 so that the clamping mechanism can engage with the underside of a rail 8. Once in place, the track unit 1 may be secured to the rail 8 by the latch 9 and/or a locking bar 10.
15 As will be readily apparent, the track unit 1 is stronger, easier to install and safer to install than known temporary speed restriction track units.
Although the present invention has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, it will be 20 understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and detail may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the accompanying claims.
