Abstract

A device for clamping a device or signalling equipment to a rail in a railway comprises a single clamp with a fixed portion 4 which carries the equipment and movable portion 3. The clamp device is located beneath the rail, with the rail being gripped between the pawls 2 and 3. The distal end pawl 3 may be spring loaded and biased to the closed or clamped position. The clamp may be provided with a locking mechanism 10, which holds the clamp shut around the rail. The equipment may be a speed restriction device or a track magnet and may be housed in a fibre glass housing or protected by rubber pads facing the oncoming traffic.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
TEMPORARY SPEED RESTRICTION TRACK UNIT The present invention relates to a temporary speed restriction track unit for use on railways.
Conventionally, a train driver is given published route information containing details of speed restrictions. However, sometimes due to urgent maintenance work or due to an incident or accident on the line, it is necessary to set up a temporary speed restriction ("TSR") on the track. This is done by placing a magnet on the track between the rails. The magnet interacts with a warning and optionally automatic braking system in the driver's cab. When the train passes over the magnet an audible and/or visual warning may be given to the driver in the cab. An emergency warning board may also be positioned along the track to give the driver advance visual warning.
A known temporary speed restriction track unit comprises a magnet which is positioned centrally between two rails. The temporary speed restriction track unit has two arms and each arm is secured to a rail. The known temporary speed restriction track unit is awkward to attach to the two rails and in order to place the unit the ballast by both rails must be excavated. It can take two engineers several hours to position and secure the known unit. Furthermore, since a power rail is often present, there is a danger of electrocution to the engineers since the rail adjacent the power rail must be excavated.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a temporary speed restriction track unit comprising a magnet and a single clamp for clamping to a rail of a railway line so that the unit is only attached to one rail of the railway line.
The temporary speed restriction track unit

middle of two rails ; and means for locking the clamp to the rail.
A particularly preferred feature of the present invention is that the magnet may have a magnetic flux density greater than conventional track magnets which have a standard strength of 60 Gauss. Strengths of 220 Gauss may be used, particularly when the magnets are to be placed on track wherein trains may travel at speeds of 80-100 mph (128-160 km/h).
Various embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. l (a) shows a side view of a temporary speed restriction track unit according to an embodiment of the present invention and Fig. l (b) shows a plan view of the unit ; and Fig. 2 (a) shows a side view of a particularly preferred temporary speed restriction track unit being located in position and Fig. 2 (b) shows a side view of the unit having been fixed in position.
A temporary speed restriction track unit 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention is shown in Fig. 1. The temporary speed restriction track unit 1 has a single arm 4 with a clamping mechanism at one end. The clamping mechanism comprises a fixed portion 2 and a movable portion 3. The movable portion 3 is preferably spring loaded and biased towards the fixed portion 2.
The unit 1 is attached to the foot of a running rail and positioned squarely in the middle of the two rails forming the railway track. The unit 1 may be locked in position with a key and/or padlock.
The unit 1 comprises a magnet assembly 5 which is arranged to be positioned in use in between the two rails. The magnet assembly 5 may be protected in the direction of travel of the train by rubber blocks 6 on each side of the magnet assembly 5 as shown in Fig.
1 (b).

invention, there is provided a method of installing a warning device on to a railway line, comprising: clamping a temporary speed restriction track unit comprising a magnet and a single clamp to a rail of a railway line.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a temporary speed restriction track unit wherein the temporary speed restriction track unit is only attached to one rail of a railway line.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a track magnet having a body portion and a single arm portion for attachment to a single rail of a railway line.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a track magnet assembly for interacting with a warning system in a train driver's cab, the track magnet assembly having only one clamp means for clamping the track magnet assembly to a rail of a railway line.
Preferably, the clamp means comprises a telescopic arm, further preferably comprising a fixed portion and a movable portion, the movable portion preferably sliding within the fixed portion or on the fixed portion. The movable portion is preferably spring biased.
The temporary speed restriction track unit is preferably locked or secured by a bolt which prevents further movement of a telescopic arm which forms one part of the clamp mechanism.
According to a seventh aspect of the present invention, there is provided a temporary speed restriction track unit for interacting with a warning system in a train, the temporary speed restriction track unit comprising : a fibre glass housing having a magnet assembly therein; a single clamp for securing the housing to just one rail and for positioning the magnet assembly in the
