Abstract
A laminate comprising overlaid plastic sheet (2, 3) with decorative articles (4) between the sheets, the plastic sheets being heat bonded together to encase the decorative articles therebetween. Preferably the method is such as to cause the decorative articles to become trapped between the sheets to create a translucent laminate. Preferably the heat is applied by placing the decorative plastic sheets in an oven and the sheets fuse together and may change their chemical composition and air may become trapped between or in the sheets. Preferably the sheets are polycarbonate sheets.
Description
f 2388340 Title: Decorative Plastic Laminate The present invention relates
to a laminate, and particularly to a laminate formed from plastic sheets such as polycarbonate sheets.
According to the present invention there is provided a laminate comprising two or more overlaid plastic sheets having decorative articles between the sheets, said sheets being heat bonded together to encase the decorative articles therebetween.
Preferably the sheets are heat bonded together such as to create a translucent laminate.
Preferably the sheets are polycarbonate sheets The invention also relates to a method of producing a laminate comprising placing decorative articles between overlaid plastic sheets and applying heat to said overlaid plastic sheets whereby to heat bond the sheets together tO encase the decorative articles therebetween. Preferably the heat is applied by placing the plastic sheets in a preheated oven Preferably the plastic sheets are supported on a tray that is placed in the oven.
Preferably the plastic sheets are placed in the oven from between 5 and 60 minutes.
Preferably the temperature of the oven is about 275 C. Preferably the sheets are polycarbonate sheets. The sheets may be 4mm thick.
l Preferably the method is such as to cause the decorative articles to become trapped between the sheets to create a translucent laminate.
Preferably the sheets fuse together, change their chemical composition and air may become trapped between or in the sheets.
The decorative articles may be formed from adhesive, gold leaf, glass paint pigment, metal, glass, feathers, paper, and/or 2mm polycarbonate sheeting. Alternatively other articles may be used such as dried vegetation such as leaves and fruit.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing an exploded view of a laminate prior to heat treatment.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a laminate 1 comprising two overlaid rectangular polycarbonate sheets 2,3 having a decorative article, in the form of a dried leaf 4, between the two sheets. The sheets are heat bonded to encase the leaf 4 therebetween.
Sheets 2,3 may each be 4mm thick.
The laminate is formed by taking two sheets 2, 3 and placing the leaf 4 therebetween.
The heat is applied by placing the plastic sheets in a preheated oven. The plastic sheets may be supported on a tray that is placed in the oven. The plastic sheets are then placed in the oven from between 5 and 60 minutes. The temperature of the oven is about 275 C. The method is such as to cause the decorative articles to become trapped between the sheets to create a translucent laminate.
!' The sheets fuse together, change their chemir al composition and air may become trapped between or in the sheets.
Instead of a dried leaf, the decorative article may be formed from adhesive, gold leaf, glass paint pigment, metal, glass, feathers, paper, and/or 2mm polycarbonate sheeting.
Alternatively other articles may be used such as dried vegetation such as leaves and fruit. The laminates may be formed by gluing the sheets together to encase the decorative articles therebetween before heating.
The laminate of the invention may be used to create panes for window frames or in conservatories, or to produce decorative items such as jewellery.
Further modifications wil! be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
Claims (14)
1. A laminate comprising two or more overlaid plastics sheets with decorative articles between the sheets, the said overlaid plastics sheets being bonded together to encase the decorative article therebetween.
2. A laminate as claimed in claim 1 the laminate being formed by heat bonding the sheets together to encase the decorative articles therebetween
3. A laminate as in claims 1, 2, made from polycarbonate sheet.
4. A laminate as in any preceding claim where heat is applied by placing the plastics sheets in an oven
5. A laminate as claimed in claim 4 where the plastics sheets are supported on a tray which is placed in the oven.
6 A laminate as claimed in claim 4 where the plastics sheets are placed in the oven from between 5 and 60 minutes.
7 A laminate as claimed in claim 4 where the temperature of the oven is about 275 C.
8. A laminate as in any preceding claim where the plastic sheets are 4mm thick.
9. A laminate as in any preceding claim where the sheets are heat bonded together such as to create a translucent laminate.
10. A laminate as in any preceding claim where heating causes the sheets to fuse and or change their chemical composition
11. A laminate as in any preceding claim where the decorative article is formed from adhesive, gold leaf, glass paint pigment, metal, glass, feathers, paper, and/or 2mm polycarbonate sheeting' dried leaves and fruit.
12 A laminate as in any preceding claim where air becomes trapped between or in the sheets.
13 A laminate as in any preceding claim formed by gluing the sheets together to encase the decorative articles therebetween before heating.
14. A laminate substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
