Carbonizing processes.-Shale is distilled in a descending column in which a zone of combustion is maintained at the lower part by supplying a mixture of air and incombustible gas. The amount of the air-gas mixture is regulated to maintain a distillation zone above the combustion zone, and the proportions of the mixture are adjusted to prevent combustion in the distillation zone from which the gases and vapours are led off. for the recovery of the volatiles. The condensates are withdrawn through a pipe S<1> and the gases remaining are forced by a pump M<1> through the pipe G. If these gases contain a high proportion of carbon monoxide, they may be burned in a furnace with air and the combustion products passed to the pipe G.
