Abstract
238,657. Haddan, R., (United Printing Machinery Co.). June 18, 1924. Stretching mechanism.- In a machine for smoothing paper sheets, and which may be adapted to bronze the sheets, the sheets are carried by a conveyer beneath a pair of belts or belt systems each arranged at an obtuse angle to the line of movement of the sheets. In one form of machine, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the sheets are fed from a table 1 by rollers 2, 3 to an endless feeding-band 5, above which are arranged two endless belts 6, 7, the lower parts of which are inclined to and move away from the line of feed and engage each sheet so as to assist the feeding of it and to smooth out any wrinkles in it. When the machine is used as a bronzing- machine, bronze powder is supplied to the sheets from a hopper 4d by the roller 2, and the belts 6, 7 serve to rub the powder on the sheets and to remove the surplus. A cleaning-roller 15 and bin 15<d> are placed beneath the roller 3. The belt 6 passes over pulleys 6b on a central spindle 8 and pulleys 6a attached to the side frame 1<e>, its ends passing around a pulley 6p on the main shaft 9; the belt 7 is similarly mounted at the opposite side of the machine. The endless band 5 passes around the roller 3 and a roller 13 both of which are mounted in a frame 23<a> removably mounted in the main frame so that the band and rollers can be removed bodily when the machine requires cleaning. One or more separate belts may be employed in place of the continuous belts 6, 7. In a second form of machine, shown in Figs. 5 and 7, the sheets S are fed by an endless conveyer 8 between a feeding and powder-supplying roller 2 and a drum 1, after which they pass beneath endless belts 12, 13 inclined to the line of feed and the lower parts of which remove crinkles in the sheet, rub the powder into the sheet, and remove the surplus powder.
