Abstract

A cast austenitic manganese-nickel steel of percentage composition by weight: ```C 0.85-1.20 ```Mn 9.0-13.5 ```Ni 2.75-4.5 ```And optionally Si, S, P, Cr, Mo, Ni, Ti and V ```Balance Fe The cast steel may be solution treated and used in the manufacture or repair of railway crossings.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Title of the Invention Railway Crossings, etc Field of the Invention This invention relates to an austenitic manganese steel and to railway crossings cast from such steel.
Background of the Invention It is well known that in Railway permanent way, at locations of high anticipated wear/impact, such as a crossing, the benefits to be gained from using a highly wear resistant austenitic manganese steels, however one of the penalties of using these work hardening steels is their susceptibility to early deformation, during initial service, due to their being supplied"soft"and"hardening up", under traffic. During this hardening up period in service, the running surface plastically deforms and some metal flow occurs, leading to the characteristic lipping along the running edges and some loss of nose height occurs. If this lipped metal is not removed on a routine basis, by regular maintenance grinding, it can be a source of cracking, RCF, that can shorten the life of the crossing, leading to its replacement.
Object of the Invention A basic object of the invention is the provision of an improved steel and railway crossing cast from such steel that is less susceptible to early deformation, leading to less maintenance grinding whilst in service and prolonging the crossings use.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Summary of a First Aspect of the Invention According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a cast austenitic manganese nickel steel of percentage composition by weight :
C Mn Si S P Cr Mo Ni Ti V 0.85/1. 20 90/13. 5 1.00x 0.04x 0.05x 2. 0x 0.75x 2.75/4. 5 0. 1x 0.3x balance Fe.
Preferably, the steel is fully solution treated, to impart maximum toughness.
Summary of a Second Aspect of the Invention According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a railway crossing produced in the cast, austenitic manganese steel of the first aspect, which has been fully solution treated.
Advantages of the Invention The heat treated cast Mn Ni crossing, can then be fishplated to rolled rail or possibly flash butt welded to the rolled rail, via use of a dissimilar joint. The introduction of nickel in the range specified, in an austenitic manganese steel has been found to accelerate the rate of work hardening in service, thereby producing a railway crossing that is less prone to deformation In early use than prior art proposals, and, consequently, a crossing requiring less maintenance than prior art proposals, whilst prolonging the service life of a crossing compared with prior art proposals.
