Abstract

A load bearing member comprises at least one elongate plastics member (20a) having a reinforcing arrangement (46, Figure 4) extending longitudinally along the plastics portion. In a preferred embodiment the load bearing member includes at least one web (22, 26) of plastics material having reinforcing arrangements along the edges of the webs, the arrangement being, for example, I, T or cruciform in section (Figures 1, 2 and 5 respectively). Preferably the load bearing member is connectable to like load bearing members. In an alternative embodiment the plastics webs are joined to form a hollow member (Figures 6-8). In a further embodiment the load bearing member is in the form of a tube (Figure 9). The load bearing member of the invention can be used as a pile or shuttering.

Description

Load-Bearina Members The present invention relates to elongate load-
bearing members for use in construction and in particular, but not exclusively, to members for use as piles, beams, lintels, shutters or the like.
The invention provides an elongate load-bearing member for use in construction, comprising at least one elongate portion of plastics material, and a reinforcing arrangement extending longitudinally along the plastics portion.
The plastics portion may be generally planar.
Preferably the or a reinforcing arrangement is located at an edge of the plastics portion. A reinforcing arrangement may be located at each edge of the plastics portion. The reinforcing arrangement may include a reinforcing rod, wire, rope or other reinforcing member. Alternatively, the reinforcing arrangement may include a channel for receiving a reinforcing member.
The member is preferably arranged for interconnection with another like member. The member may include an elongate planar web of plastics material and having reinforcing arrangements along both edges. The member may have a further elongate planar web of plastics material connected at one edge to the first planar web at a line in-board of the edges of the first web, and having a reinforcing arrangement along the free edge thereof. Alternatively, the member may have additional wings extending laterally from the reinforcing arrangements. The additional wings may carry interconnection arrangements at their free edges. Preferably, the additional wings are not co-planar with the planar web.
The member may have a plurality of planar webs extending laterally from a common location and carrying reinforcing arrangements at their free
edges. There may be four such planar webs.
The member may have at least one hollow chamber. The member may be generally circular in section, having a central circular chamber. The member may have a plurality of planar webs forming a closed, hollow, elongate member.
There may be reinforcing arrangements along each edge of the hollow member.
The hollow member may have a plurality of chambers, which may be triangular, square or rectangular in section.
Examples of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a section through a simple form of elongate load-bearing member in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section through a Tsection member; Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of the member of Fig. 2, in use; Fig. 4 is a section through a cranked-section member, in use; Fig. 5 is a section through a cruciform member; Fig. 6 is a section through a triangular box-section member, in use; Fig. 7 is a section through a modified triangular box-section member; Fig. 8 is a section through a more complex box-section member; and Fig. 9 is a section through a circular member.
Fig. 1 is a section through an elongate load-bearing member 10, for use in construction. The member 10 may be used as a pile. In particular, the
member 10 may be used as a cut-off pile for forming a cut-off wall as a barrier against-movement of ground water etc. Alternatively, the member 10 may be used as a beam, lintel or the like. Consequently, the member 10 may be designed to bear forces which are longitudinal, lateral or both.
The member 10 has a central web 12 forming a generally planar portion and made of synthetic plastics material. Reinforcing arrangements 14 extend longitudinally along both edges of the web 12. Each reinforcing arrangement 14 includes a reinforcing bar 16. Alternatively, the location of the bar 16 may be a void for receiving a reinforcing member inserted subsequently. For example, a tension bar would allow the member 10 to be pre-stressed. Pre-
stressing may also be used to deform the member 10, for example to a curved form, and to lock the member 10 in the deformed shape. The reinforcing member could alternatively be a wire, rope or other member sufficiently strong to impart additional strength to the member 10. In particular, a member with high tensile strength can be used to increase stiffness.
The section of the member 10 is preferably substantially constant along its length and the member may be of indefinite length. Consequently, the member 10 may be formed by extrusion. Reinforcing bars 16, if present, can be introduced into the member 10 during extrusion, for example from coil stock.
Fig. 2 is a section of a member 20 of alternative section and again of indefinite length. The member 20 may be used as a pile, cut-off pile, beam, lintel or the like. The member 20 has a first web 22 having reinforcing arrangements 24 along both edges. A second web 26 extends generally perpendicular to the web 22 and is attached along one edge to the first web 22, along a line 28 in-board of the first web 22. Consequently, the member 20 has a T-section. The free end of the second web 26 carries a further reinforcing arrangement 30. The reinforcing arrangements 24,30 may incorporate bars 32 or voids for receiving reinforcing members.
Fig. 3 shows two modified versions 20A of the member 20, in use, for
example as a cut-off pile. When used as a cut-off pile, the view in Fig. 3 will be at a horizontal plane. The modification in the member 20A relates primarily to the edges of the first web 22. One edge 34 is formed as a channel section along the whole length of the member 20A. The other edge 36 carries a head forming a male edge for insertion into a female edge 34 of a corresponding member 20A, to interconnect the two members as indicated at 38.
Other features of the members 20A correspond with features of the member 20 and are thus given the same reference numerals. The free edge of the second web 26 is illustrated as a void for receiving a reinforcing member, or could be a reinforcing bar.
Fig. 4 illustrates a further member 40, which may be used as a pile, cut-
off pile, beam, lintel or the like. In particular, the member 40 is adapted for interconnection with other like members, particularly to form a cut-off pile.
Fig. 4 shows two such members interconnected.
The member 40 has a central web 42 which is generally planar and carries reinforcing arrangements 44 along both edges. The reinforcing arrangements may be reinforcing bars 46, or voids for receiving reinforcing members. Additional wings 48 extend beyond the reinforcing arrangements 44, away from the central web 42. The wings 48 are preferably not co-planar with the web 42, but are preferably parallel with each other, thus forming a cranked cross-section to the member 40. The free edges of the wings 48 carry male and female edges 50,52 like the edges 36,34 described in relation to Fig. 3 and thus able to be used for interconnecting two members 40, as at 54.
The shape of the male and female edges 36,34 may be adequate to provide a watertight seal between members 20A,40, or an additional seal strip (not shown) may be located in the female edges 34,52, before interconnection.
Fig. 5 illustrates a member 56 which is of cruciform section, having a plurality of planar webs 58 extending laterally from a common location 60. A
reinforcing arrangement 62 is provided centrally, at 60. In addition, the free edges of each web 56 also carry reinforcing arrangements. Any of the reinforcing arrangements 62,64 may be reinforcing bars 66 or voids for receiving reinforcing members. Alternatively, opposite pairs of reinforcing arrangements 64 may be replaced with male and female edges, as described above, to allow interconnection of two members 56.
In this example, four webs 58 extend from the common location 60 to provide a cruciform shape, but fewer or more webs could be provided. In particular, additional webs provides additional surface area around the member 56, which may be advantageous when the member 56 is to be driven for use as a pile.
Fig. 6 shows a section through a member which may be driven into the ground to serve as a pile, or for construction of a cut-off wall, for example. The member 68 has a generally triangular section, having three planar faces 70.
Male and female edges 72,74 are provided along two edges of the member 68 to allow interconnection in the manner described above, as illustrated at 76. The third edge incorporates a reinforcing arrangement 78, in the form of a bar or void for receiving a reinforcing member.
The faces 70 define between them a central void 80, reducing the volume of material and hence the weight of the member 68, as compared with a solid member of the same section, while retaining the same outer surface area, which contributes to the effectiveness of the pile for load bearing.
Fig. 7 shows a member 82 which is a modified version of the triangular member just described, and which may be used as a load-bearing beam, for example. In place of the male and female edges 72,74 of the member 68, the member 82 has two further reinforcing arrangements in the form of reinforcing bars or voids for receiving reinforcing members, preferably for pretensioning.
Thus, no provision is made for interconnection with other members 82, but reinforcing is provided at all three edges.
Fig. 8 is a section through a member 86 which can be used as a beam, lintel, pile or the like. The member 86 has a generally rectangular external shape, sub-divided internally into eight voids 88. Reinforcing arrangements 90 are provided at four locations in the form of reinforcing bars or voids for receiving reinforcing members, such as tension bars for pretensioning the member 86.
Fig. 9 is a section through a member 92 which can be used as a beam, lintel, pile or the like. The member 92 is in the general form of a circular cylinder or pipe, having a generally annular (in section) wall 94 defining a circular void 96. Reinforcing arrangements 98 are provided around the wall 94 and may be in the form of reinforcing bars or voids for receiving reinforcing members, such as tension bars for pretensioning the member 92.
Many other cross-sections could be devised for elongate members in accordance with the present invention. Each of the members described above can be formed by extrusion of synthetic plastics material, with reinforcing rod being incorporated during extrusion, or voids formed for subsequent installation of reinforcing members. Other elongate voids could be provided, for example for receiving services or for conducting a water jet along the elongate member, which may assist when the member is being driven into the ground. The outer surface of the members may be formed for enhanced friction with surrounding soil when driven as a pile. For example, sand or other particulate material may be incorporated into the outer surface, or the outer surface may be perforated, roughened or profiled for enhanced keying and grip.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to
those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
