Abstract
238,004. Knowsley Electrical Co., Ltd., Woodroffe, F. K., and Dawson, R. H. N. May 9, 1924. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Rudders, indicating position of.- In apparatus for signalling the movements of a ship's rudder head to a distance, in which a contact arm cooperates with resistances to vary the resultant field of electromagnets having a rotatable armature carrying a pointer, one or other of three lamps is lit when the pointer &c. is in its central or side positions. As shown in Fig. 1, a rudder head 13 operates a contact arm 1 through quadrants 14, 15 which are connected by chains &c. 16 to allow a small movement of the rudder without affecting the contact arm. The arm 1 has a contact 3 which engages two sets of resistance elements 4, 5 and a contact bar 6. The ends of the resistances 4, 5 are connected through electromagnets 23, 24 to magnets 17, 18 controlling a pivoted armature 19 and pointer 20. Located between the resistances 4, 5 is an insulated contact 10 which is connected to an electromagnet 30 and a white lamp 31. The contact 3 is of such a width that when in its central position it bridges the contact 10 and makes contact with the resistances 4, 5. In this position, the magnets 17, 18 are equally energized to hold the pointer illuminated. The magnet 30 holds an armature 25 against operation by one or other of the magnets 23, 24. When the arm 1 is deflected over one or other of the resistances 4. 5 the circuit of the magnet 30 and the lamps 31 is broken and the field of one or other of the magnets 17, 18 is strengthened whilst the other is weakened to move the pointer into its indicating position. Simultaneously, one or other of the magnets 23, 24 attracts the armature 25 to close one or other of the contacts 27, 28 of lamps 32, 33 which are red and green respectively. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the arm 1 is directly connected to the receiver and the signalling lamps are controlled by contacts 26, 28 which are operated by a cam 40 on the pointer spindle. The cam has a contact which in the normal position of the pointer engages both contacts 26 to illuminate the lamp 31. A modified form of connection between the rudder head and the contact arm is shown in Fig. 4. A bar 42 on the rudder head 13 is connected to a bar 43 mounted on the contact arm by spring controlled plungers 44. The resistance sections 4, 5, Fig. 1, may be formed with plug and socket so as to ba readily removable in case of failure. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of a curved tubular lamp with coloured sections lit by separate filaments.
