Abstract

A lavatory seat (6) and cover (7), designed to fit onto a standard lavatory pan that is raised by depressing a removable foot-operated pedal (4). Once raised, the cover remains in the upright position until it is lowered by hand. The seat is lowered in a slow, controlled manner once the pedal is released using mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic devices. The foot pedal can be removed to enable the seat and cover to be operated manually.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Foot operated lavatory seat and cover This invention relates to a lavatory seat and cover, fitted to a standard lavatory pan that can be raised and lowered by using a foot-operated pedal and without having to touch the seat by hand.
Lavatory seats and covers are in common use but rely on the user raising and lowering the seat by hand. Raising the seat by hand can be difficult for disabled users and is resisted when the seat is unclean.
Accordingly, this invention provides a foot-operated pedal that raises a purpose designed seat and cover. The seat and cover remain upright for as long as the pedal is depressed. Once the pedal is released, the seat is then lowered in a slow and controlled manner, using suitable mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic devices, without banging onto the lavatory pan. The cover remains upright until being lowered by hand.
Preferably the seat and cover are made from hard plastics materials with appropriate metal components. The foot pedal and raising and lowering mechanism would preferably be made predominantly from metal components. The whole assembly is designed and constructed to allow it to be easily cleaned while retaining a domestic appearance.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing (page 4) using annotated numbers. The drawing shows a perspective view of the purpose designed lavatory seat and cover and its foot-operated raising and lowering assembly, as follows : Fixing lugs, 1, are of variable pitch to enable the seat and cover to be fitted to standard, commonly available, lavatory pans.
Hinge, 2, is designed to enable the cover to rest in the upright position once the pedal is released, as described below.
Metal casing, 3, is of variable height to suit different height lavatory pans.
This element is firmly fixed between the hinge and the floor to provide leverage for the lowering mechanism.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Foot-operated lever pedal, 4, rests in a raised position with its leading end approximately 100 to 150mm from the floor. When depressed to the floor by foot, it acts to raise the seat and cover using a combination of levers. The foot-operated pedal can be manually removed making the seat and cover manually operable. The pedal can be fitted on either side of the pan.
RAckr, h-qniczm fnr roicinri onri lr% IA,, mrim +I,echan'sm for raising and'cwenng the seat and cover, 5, indudes an arrangement of rods and levers used to raise the seat and cover. The mechanism also allows for the seat to be lowered in a slow controlled manner once the foot pedal is released using pistons, a ratchet mechanism or some other mechanical, hydraulic of pneumatic device.
Lavatory seat, 6, is shaped as a standard lavatory seat, attached to the hinge, and is modified to enable it to be raised by the foot-operated lever pedal mechanism. It houses the necessary connection near the hinge for the lowering device.
Lavatory cover, 7, is similar to a standard lavatory cover, attached to the hinge, and is raised by the foot-operated lever pedal mechanism. It rests in the upright position until lowered by hand.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1. The device is such that it enables the purpose made lavatory seat and cover, fixed to a standard lavatory pan, to be raised when the foot operated pedal is depressed.
  2. 2. Once the pedal is released, the seat, as claimed in claim 1, is lowered slowly, in a controlled manner, without banging into the lavatory pan.
  3. 3. The lowering device as claimed in claim 2, is operated by mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components.
  4. 4. Once raised, the cover, as claimed in claim 1, remains in the upright position until lowered by hand.
  5. 5. The foot-operated pedal, as claimed in claim 1, can be removed by hand, making the seat and cover manually operated.
