Abstract

A box folded from a blank preferably in accordance with the ECMA code has a rider portion (11b) in the form of an advertising carrier which can be separated from the box, for example along a perforated or groove-cut combination line (13). The rider portion (11b) may be folded and releasably attached to the box by an adhesive. The box may be used for packaging food or non-food products.

Description

FOLDING BOX The invention concerns a three-dimensional folding box produced from a flat blank having individual fold portions, preferably in accordance with the ECMA-code series from paper, card. cardboard or the like, as packaging for a product in the food or non-food sector.
Such folding or collapsible boxes in the form of enclosing packagings were produced for the product in the form of a closed article. To deal with the situation where advertising or promotional articles were to be marketed together with the finished product, it was hitherto necessary for the advertising or promotional item to be subsequently applied to the folding box in its finished manufactured and packed condition. That can either be implemented manually, which is extremely cost-intensive and therefore undesirable.
If it is to be implemented automatically, that requires complicated and expensive additional systems, generally automatic product feed assemblies, which then provides the normal packaging with the advertising or promotional items. Added to that is the fact that this system is limited in terms of the size and extent of the advertising or promotional item to be added and ultimately represents a not inconsiderable cost factor as, due to their complex technology, modern packaging lines represent a high proportion of the costs involved in manufacture.
The object of the present invention is so to design a folding or collapsible box that advertising or promotional items can be more easily applied.
In a folding box of the general kind set forth, in accordance with the classifying portion of the main claim, that object is attained in accordance with the invention by the characterising features of the main claim.
Thus, in accordance with the invention, a rider portion or allonge is releasably secured to a part of the blank and in addition the folding box is formed from the blank with attachment of the rider portion in the form of an advertising carrier which can be separated from the folding box, in the form of a cardboard blank.
That configuration of the folding box with the releasably attached rider portion has the advantage that the basic shapes of any automatic packagings are supplemented by the rider portion which is absolutely variable in terms of its format. It can be of a two, four or six or however also eight-sided configuration, this respectively depending on the available automatic printing and stamping apparatuses. This rider portion is generally arranged at the last folding part of the box, but it can also be disposed at other positions of the box and can be carried along in the form of an attached cardboard blank in the packing operation by means of a modern packing installation. The rider portion which is extremely variable in respect of size and nature and configuration can now be used as a promotional item. In that respect the rider portion as a two-dimensional part may involve the function of handicraft sheets, party games or card games. It can however also be in the form of containers for receiving three-dimensional articles. At any event the rider portion is so designed that it can be easily later separated from the folding box with the inserted product. In that respect it is important that the folding box is not damaged by separation of the rider portion. The original packaging of the product therefore retains its normal function. The separated rider portion, once separated from the folding box, can take over the function allocated thereto. For that purpose the rider portion is adapted to those aspects in terms of production technology.
To sum up the extremely great advantage enjoyed is that cost-intensive automatic feed devices for the advertising or promotional items to the
folding box in the finished manufactured and packed condition as packaging for enclosing articles are no longer necessary as all feed procedures can be dealt with outside the packing lines. The packing lines can again run at the normal optimum speed.
Further advantageous configurations and developments of the invention are characterised in the appendant claims.
An embodiment of the invention is described in greater detail hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the drawing in which: Figure la shows a first embodiment of a blank with the rider portion in the form of a flat part, Figure I b shows the folding box produced in a partly finished condition from the flat blank together with the rider portion, with an advertising carrier, Figure 2a shows a second embodiment of a blank with rider portion, and Figure 2b shows the folding box produced therefrom in the partly finished condition with the advertising carrier attached thereto.
Figure la shows a per se known blank for a folding or collapsible box in accordance with the ECMA-code 10a. A rider portion or allonge which is generally identified by reference lla is attached to the blank at a folding edge 12 of the blank releasably, for example by means of a perforation and/or a groove-cut combination. The folding box 10b as is shown in the partially finished condition in Figure lb is produced from the per se known blank 10a. At its fold edge 12 the rider portion which is now in the form of
an advertising carrier lib is attached as a wrap-around folded portion. The advertising carrier lib can be released from the folding box without any problem along the fold edge 12, for example by tearing off along the perforation 13.
Figure 2a shows a blank 20a in accordance with the ECMA-code, of a different configuration. The rider portion which is generally identified by reference 21 a is also releasably attached to the fold edge by means of a perforation 13. As Figure 2b in the partially finished condition shows, the blank 20a can be used to produce the folding box 20b to which the advertising carrier 21b which is formed by the rider portion, in the form of a wrap-around folded portion, is fitted.
In both embodiments the rider portion 11 a or 21a is formed in three parts with three rectangles c, d and e of equal size, which are so prepared by means of groove or slit or scratch lines 14 that it is possible in that way to produce the wrap-around folded portion shown in Figures 1 b and 2b respectively, in the form of an advertising carrier, which is releasable by means of the perforation line 13 from the folding box 20b without damaging same. In addition the rider portion fla, 21a which is folded in a zig-zag configuration, at the side opposite to the perforation, is secured to the folding box 10b, 20b releasably therefrom by means of an adhesive glue.

Claims (7)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A three-dimensional folding box (lOb, 20b), produced from a flat blank having individual fold portions, preferably in accordance with the ECMA-code series from paper, card, cardboard or the like, as packaging for a product in the food or non-food sector, characterised in that a rider
portion (lla, 21a) is releasably secured to a part of the blank (lofa, 20a), that the folding box (lOb. 20b) is produced from the blank (loua, 20a) as an enclosing packaging for the packable product, with the attached rider portion (alla, 21a), and that the rider portion is in the form of an advertising carrier (lib, 21b) in the form of a cardboard blank which can be separated from the folding box.
  2. 2. A folding box according to claim 1 characterised in that the rider portion (lla, 21a) is secured releasably to a fold portion of the blank, which can be folded in last to form the packaging.
  3. 3. A folding box according to claim 2 characterised in that the rider portion (lla, 21a) is secured releasably to the blank (lofa, 20a) by means of a perforation or groove-cut combination and is thus separable from the folding box (lOb, 20b).
