Abstract

A device for dissolving materials comprises an orbital shaker and a bath having an ultrasonic transducer, in which a container holding the materials to be dissolved is held. Ultrasonic waves are transmitted to the container via the fluid in the bath. The device may further comprise a computer-controlled shaker and temperature control.

Description

Combined Vortex and Ultrasound Dissolution Device The invention relates to the requirement in scientific laboratories to dissolve materials in fluids.
Background Combining standard techniques for dissolving materials ensures that the process can be accomplished faster and more thoroughly.
An object of this invention is to combine orbital vortex shaking, such that the fluid used for dissolution is agitated, and ultrasound such that the material in the fluid is subject to disruption.
Essential Features The device consists of a position or number of positions adaptable and suitable for containers for fluids and solutions. The position or positions are such that they can be moved in an orbital fashion by a motor or motors and thus shake the containers and the contents of the containers. The position or positions are located such that the container or containers are suspended in a bath. The bath has an ultrasonic transducer allowing for ultrasound energy to be translated, via the bath liquid, into the suspended container. The purpose of the shake and introduction of the ultrasound energy being to affect the possible dissolution of the matter within the container or containers Important But Not Essential Features Preferably the orbital vortex shaker is computer controlled so that the fluid can swirl over the entire container walls and provide periods of suitably strong agitation. Preferably the ultrasound is introduced by way of holding the material to be dissolved and the fluid in a container within an ultrasound bath. Preferably the ultrasound bath is temperature controlled to enhance the effect of heat on dissolution or to minimise degradation of the material.
Description A stepper motor is attached to plate such that operation of the motor effects an orbital movement of the plate by means of an offset bearing. The plate also forms a rack that holds a laboratory flask containing fluid and material such that the flask is suspended within a water bath with attached ultrasound transducer. Upon driving the orbital shaker to swirl the fluid and energising the transducer there is quick and effective dissolution of the particulate matter in the flask. Accurate control of the orbital shake motor allows for minimal solvent to be used to dissolve dried particulate matter on the container walls by means of an energetic swirl.
