Abstract
The system has a number of powered vehicles that move along a rail fixed along the tunnel and can dispense either water or foam on the fire. A remote control system located in a nearby fire station is linked to the fire sensors in the tunnel and will automatically dispatch the nearest located vehicle. The vehicles move along a U shaped rail which is compartmentalised and contains their water supply. The compartments have valved inlets for a supply of water from a pipe running along the tunnel. Sensors monitor the water level in the compartments.
Description
DESCRIPTION
This invention relates to a fire fighting system for tunnel.
Most tunnels all over the world rely on passive systems for protection against fires, consisting mainly of a smaller, parallel emergency tunnel that is connected to the main tunnel through fire doors, or fire exits to the surface, or fire protection rooms at regular intervals along the tunnel and sensors such as heat sensitive fibre optics, heat detectors or smoke detectors. Because fires in tunnels occur mainly inside carriages and road vehicles that contain flammable materials such as plastics, fuel, oils, and gum, and because large amounts of outside air are available to feed them with oxygen, fires develop rapidly in size and bring walls and hardware quickly to high temperatures, creating a situation where massive amounts of water and fire fighting foam are needed. Another problem comes from the fact that access to the fire is in general very difficult, if possible at all, due to a combination of factors such as the presence of these carriages or road vehicles, the presence of intoxicating smoke, the absence of breathable air needed for men and truck engines, and a situation of fast changing visibility conditions. Finally, a significant amount of time is required for fire fighting vehicles to travel from the nearest fire station to the fire.
According to the present invention there is provided a fire fighting system for tunnel comprising a number of powered vehicles that can move along a rail fixed along the tunnel. Each vehicle is initially in a stand-by position and can be called to a fire's location by a central remote control system.
Onboard each vehicle is an electric motor to power it on the rail, a water pump, an electric motor coupled to an air compressor, a foaming agent container, a video camera, a light and an emitter/receiver radio system.
The rail has a U shape and is divided into individual compartments by he presence of dividing vertical surfaces at regular intervals. A water pipe is provided near and along the rail and water inlets are provided for each rail compartment in order to fill each one independently. A remotely activated electric valve is provided on each inlet. A water level sensor is also provided to monitor the water level in the compartment.
A remote control system located in a nearby 24h manned fire station is linked to the fire sensors in the tunnel and will automatically dispatch the nearest located vehicle to the location of the detected fire. Using the video image from the video camera, fire fighters at the remote control station can then manually remote control the vehicle as well as its directed water dispenser that can be aimed in all directions by two small electric motors.
Any vehicle in the system can be used to fight a fire, giving multiple fires fighting capability.
When a fire is detected, the remote control system sends he nearest located vehicle to the location of the fire and fills the corresponding rail compartment with water. As water is subsequently pumped from the rail compartment by the water pump and thrown onto the fire, the electric valve, based on information from the water level sensor, refills the rail compartment with water.
The fire fighting system for tunnel provides for very quick, unimpeded access to the fires and fight fires from the very early stage of their development over an unlimited period of time with large amounts of foam and water locally, from above, while fire fighters remain in a risk-free environment.
Remark:
Additional lay-by segments to the supporting base may be added o the system to allow for parking and redirecting the vehicles to the tunnel's ends where they can be refilled with foaming agent.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the fire fighting system for tunnel.
Referring to the drawing the fire fighting system for tunnel comprises a number of powered water and foam dispensing vehicles 3 that can move along a rail 2, a water pipe 1, separating surfaces 6 for each rail compartment, electric valves 4 that are used to fill and refill each compartment, an electric power cable 7. Radio relay station 8 and emitter/receiver are show but electric cables or fiber optics are not. On the vehicle are an electric motor 9 for powering he vehicle, an air compressor 10, a water pump 11 and a movable directed water/foam dispenser 12.
At least one emergency electrical power generator is provided to take over in case of power failure.
