Abstract

A swimming pool (1) includes a surround portion (2) and a support means, where the support means preferably includes a planiform base structure (12) located beneath the surround in a cantilevered fashion and a jack (14) for applying an upward force to then base structure. A membrane (21) may be used to form a waterproof barrier between the pool area (3) and the jack. The swimming pool may also include a pool cover (4) which is movable between the base structure and the jack.

Description

SWIMMING POOLS This invention relates to swimming pools and is concerned with swimming pools having pool surround portions which encompass, at least in part, the pool.
According to the invention, a swimming pool has a pool surround portion and means for applying an upwardly-acting support force to the surround portion.
The support means may comprise a planiform base structure disposed beneath the pool surround portion and jacking means for applying an upwardly acting force to the base structure so that the base structure reacts against any downwardly-acting load applied to the pool surround portion.
The base structure is preferably cantilever-mounted.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective, with parts removed, of a swimming pool according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a side view, in detail.
With reference to the drawings, a swimming pool 1 has pool surround portions 2 formed by coping stones or tiles 10 which encompass the pool water area 3.
The pool 1 has a removable pool cover 4 comprising a sheet 5 mounted on a shaft 6 for covering/uncovering movement across the pool water area 3 in the directions indicated by the double-headed arrow 7. The shaft 6 and associated equipment is disposed in a pool housing 30.
The cover sheet 5 is conveyed in tracks (not shown) disposed between the level of pool water and the coping tiles 10.
Means are provided for applying an upwardly-acting support force 11 (Figure 2) to the pool surround portion 2. These means comprise a planiform base structure 12 disposed immediately beneath and in contact with the pool surround portion 2, and jacking means comprising an"I"section beam 13 and hydraulic jack 14 for applying the force 11 to the base structure 12. The jack 14 comprises load-applying piston rod 15 and actuating cylinder 16. Linear movement of the piston rod 15 is caused by activating cylinder 16. Linear movements of the piston rod 15 is indicated by the double-headed arrow 17.
The Beam 13 need not be of"I"section. Any suitable cross-section beam may be used.
The base structure 12, which comprises a load-spreading plate, is cantilever-mounted as indicated by reference numeral 20. The mounting 20 is fixed to the back wall (not show) of the pool cover house 30.
The base structure 12 and beam 13 extend beneath the pool surround 2 at the pool housing end. The pool cover sheet 5 is disposed between the bottom surface of the base 12 and the upper surface of the beam 13. Thus, when the jack 14 is actuated so as to apply the upwardly-acting force 11, the sheet 5 is firmly clamped in place.
A flexible membrane 21 extends between the upper edge of the beam 13 and the upper edge of a peripheral wall 22 which contains the water in the pool.
The membrane 21 serves as a water barrier and prevents ingress of water from the pool water area 3 into the pool cover housing 30 when the beam 13 is in the up position.
In operation, the upwardly-acting force 11 is used to react against any downwardly-acting load 25 (Figure 2) resulting from the weight of pedestrians, swimmers and divers using the pool 1.
In practice, several plates 12, beams 13 and associated jacks 14 are disposed at the pool housing end. The invention results in a compact arrangement whereby the pool surround is firmly supported at all times.
As an alternative to the hydraulic jack 14, an electrically-powered linear activating jack may be used.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A swimming pool having a pool surround portion and means for applying an upwardly-acting support force to the surround portion.
  2. 2. A swimming pool as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the support means comprise a planiform base structure disposed beneath the pool surround portion and jacking means for applying the upwardly-acting force to the base structure so that the base structure reacts against any downwardly-acting load applied to the pool surround portion.
  3. 3. A swimming pool as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the base structure is mounted in a cantilever manner.
  4. 4. A swimming pool as claimed in Claim 2 or 3, wherein the jacking means comprise hydraulic jack means.
  5. 5. A swimming pool as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, provided with a swimming pool cover movable across the pool water area.
  6. 6. A swimming pool as claimed in Claim 5, when applied to Claim 2, wherein the pool cover is movable between the base structure and the jacking means.
  7. 7. A swimming pool as claimed in any one of Claims 2 to 6, provided with flexible membrane means forming a water barrier between the pool water area and the jacking means.
  8. 8. A swimming pool substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
    8. A swimming pool as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 7, wherein the pool surround portion comprises coping tiles.
