Abstract
236,997. Robinson, R. H. April 14, 1924. Concrete vessels; frames and framing.-Pre-cast hull panels each of which comprise a marginal metallic frame and a wall of concrete cast iron and having its surface raised above the frame are adapted to be set in openings formed by precast longitudinal frames and spaced transverse girder frames connecting the same. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the main tubular longitudinal members 1, 2, are of approximately 90‹ segments in cross section and constitute the corners of the ship section. Each longitudinal comprises three, radially-disposed main reinforcements 3, 4, 5, and barlike reinforcements 6, 7. The reinforcements 3 terminate in the case' of the upper longitudinals, in rails 10 which serve as tracks for a travelling crane. The transverse members 11, 15 and the main and sub-longitudinals 18, 17 are of lattice structure. The precast plates which are inserted in the spaces formed by the intersecting main frame members comprise a metal lic marginal frame 20, Fig. 12, with sets of reinforcing-rods attached thereto concrete being cast in the interstices in a mould which leaves a flange like extension on the finished plate. An outer layer of bituminous concrete is applied after the concrete proper has been screeded and hardened. Various forms of these panel plates are described: some are of lenticular cross-section and cellular in structure. The panel plates are united to the main frame members in various ways so as to produce a rigid metal to metal union as, for example, in Fig. 11, where the vertical web of the marginal angle and the plate is riveted to a similar angle in the frame and concrete poured in the closed space 26 so formed. The form and disposition of the reinforcement members in the frame members is susceptible of considerable modifications and in some cases the longitudinals are solid instead of hollow. In certain forms the sides and bottom of the hull are bulged outwards and the longitudinal members are multiplied but made lighter. Hulls of this character may be supported by a central cross-section pillar. The methods of construction employed include means in which the use of a slipway is eliminated, three main longitudinals being floated into position and secured by transverse girders; the bottom panel plates are then secured in place and their joints with the main frames closed. The bottom may then be turned right side up and the sides of the hull fabricated.
