Description
Description
TAILGATE ASSEMBLY FOR A WORK MACHINE Technical Field
The present invention relates to a tailgate assembly for a work machine, and more particularly, a tailgate arrangement thereof which provides for a width of material distribution substantially greater than the width of the work machine.
Background Art
Work machines of the type adapted to carry loads of loose material oftentimes are equipped with tailgates to keep the load constrained within the work machine receptacle until such time as it is desired to dump the load. Upon this occurrence, and depending upon the configuration of the work machine receptacle, the operator typically actuates a hoisting mechanism to tilt the receptacle so as to allow gravity to cause the material to be discharged therefrom.
Alternatively, the work machine receptacle may remain in a static condition while an ejector blade is used to push the material from the receptacle. Regardless of the type work machine used, the width of the material stream being discharged from the receptacle is typically limited to the width of the receptacle.
For those applications in which the material is to be uniformly distributed over a given ground surface, it would be beneficial to decrease the number of material
depositing passes required by the work machine by providing the work machine with the capability to produce a material stream with a width greater than the width of the receptacle.
The present invention is directed at overcoming one or more of the problems as set forth above.
Disclosure of the Invention
In one aspect of the present invention a tailgate arrangement is provided having a tailgate body and at least one material deflection device attached to said tailgate body.
In another aspect of the present invention a tailgate arrangement for distributing material from a work machine receptacle to the ground surface is provided. The tailgate arrangement has a tailgate body which has a leading portion, a trailing portion, and a tailgate body centerline extending between the leading portion and the trailing portion. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
With reference to the drawings and particularly Fig. 1, a load carrying work machine, embodied herein as an articulated truck, is shown generally at 100. The work machine 100 has a tractor portion 101 and a trailer portion 102 pivotally coupled to the tractor portion 101. The trailer portion 102 comprises a receptacle 103, having a pair of side walls both denoted herein as 104 as well as a front portion 106 and a rear portion 109, into which materials 110 are loaded to be carried to another location for deposit. To assist in the deposit or discharge of the materials 110 from the receptacle 103, an ejector blade 113 is used to push the materials 110 from the receptacle 103, thereby depositing the materials onto the ground surface 114.
As shown, the ejector blade 113 located within the receptacle 103 and is movable between the front portion 106 and the rear portion 109 of the receptacle 103 by use of a motor 117, preferably comprising an
extendable and retractable hydraulic cylinder, which couples the ejector blade 113 to the receptacle 103.
Referring further to Fig. 1 and introducing
Fig. 2, attached to the rear portion 109 of the receptacle 103 is a tailgate assembly of the present invention, shown generally at 118, in a substantially open position. The tailgate assembly 118 comprises a tailgate body 121 pivotally attached adjacent to the rear portion 109 of the receptacle 103 and operable between an open and a closed portion by use of, preferably, hydraulic cylinders (not shown). Attached to the tailgate body 121 are a plurality of material deflection devices, each denoted generally herein as 122, which are preferably constructed of a substantially rigid and durable material.
Although the details of the material deflection devices 122 will be discussed in more detail as this disclosure progresses, suffice to say for now, and as should be appreciated, the material deflection devices 122 of the type described herein provide a width of distribution of the material unto the ground surface 114 substantially greater than the width of the work machine receptacle 103. In so doing, and as should be apparent to those of ordinary skill in such art, the number of passes required by the work machine 100 to distribute the materials 110 over a given area of the ground surface 114 is reduced.
As shown in Fig. 3, the tailgate body 121 includes a leading portion 301, a trailing portion
302, a pair of side edges 303, and a tailgate body centerline denoted 305 extending between the aforementioned leading and trailing portions 301,302, thereby dividing the tailgate body 121 into a first side 306 and a second side 309. To assist in providing a substantially uniform distribution of the materials 110, preferably three material deflection devices 122 are attached to said first side 306 of the tailgate body 121 and comprise, respectively, an inner material deflection device 122a, a middle material deflection device 122b, and an outer material deflection device 122c. Similarly, preferably three material deflection devices are attached to said second side 309 of the tailgate body 121 and comprise, respectively, an inner material deflection device 122a', a middle material deflection device 122b', and an outer material deflection device 122c'.
For purposes of the following discussion, and unless otherwise elaborated upon, similar structure corresponding to each material deflection device 122 will be denoted herein by like reference numerals. As shown, each material deflection device 122 comprises a substantially longitudinal structure having a material deflection device longitudinal axis denoted 310 oriented at an angle 0, preferably between about ten (10) degrees and about thirty (30) degrees, from the tailgate body centerline 305. More specifically, each material deflection device longitudinal axis 310 diverges from the tailgate body centerline 305 from the leading portion 301 to the
trailing portion 302. As should be appreciated, by orienting each of the material deflection devices 122 in the aforementioned manner, each of the material deflection devices 122 deflects the materials 110 away from the tailgate body centerline 305 as the materials 110 travel from the leading portion 301 to the trailing portion 302 of the tailgate body 121, thereby assisting in providing the aforementioned wider material distribution relative to the width of the receptacle 103.
To further increase the material width distribution, each outer material deflection device 122c, 122c'may be provided with an angled end portion 311, 311' directed towards the respective adjacent side edges 303 of the tailgate body 121, and each forming
an angle , relative to each respective material deflection device longitudinal axis 310, of preferably about twenty-five (25) degrees. A plurality of substantially longitudinal bar members 315, each preferably made of a rigid and durable material, interconnect, preferably by use of mechanical fasteners 316, each material deflection device 122.
As should be apparent to those of ordinary skill in such art, the bar members 315 prevents any deflection and/or deformation of the material deflection devices 122 which may be caused by discharging relatively heavy materials 110.
Shown in Fig. 4 is an elevation view of an exemplary material deflection device 122. Each material deflection device 122 comprises a base
portion 402 having a substantially planar section 403 extending upwardly normally therefrom. Each planar section 403 preferably includes a top section 406 oriented at an angle a, preferably about forty-five (45) degrees, from the plane defined by the planar section 403. As should be apparent to those of ordinary skill, the provision of the aforementioned angled top sections 406 allows for more efficient channelling of the materials 110 as the materials 110 pass over the tailgate body 121.
Shown in Fig. 5 is a bottom perspective view of the tailgate assembly 118 of the present invention.
Each material deflection device 122 is attached to the tailgate body 121 by use of a plurality of attachment structures 501, preferably comprising apertures (two shown) which are provided in the tailgate body 121, each sized to receive a mechanical fastener 502. As shown, it is preferred that each material deflection device 122 be attached to the tailgate body 121 so as to allow each material deflection device 122 to extend past the trailing portion 302 of the tailgate body 121, as shown. A plurality of additional attachment structures denoted herein as 505 may be provided adjacent the trailing portion 302 of the tailgate body 121. As should be appreciated, the provision of the additional attachment structures 505 allows for adjustment in the orientation of each material deflection device 122 relative to the tailgate body centerline 305.
As should also be appreciated by those of ordinary skill, the use of mechanical fasteners 502 to secure each material deflection device 122 to the tailgate body 121 provides for the user option of removing some or all of the material deflection devices 122 as required or desired for a particular application. A plurality of spacers comprising leading spacers 506 and trailing spacers 509 may be used to assist in securing the material deflection devices 122 to the tailgate body 121. Each trailing spacer 509 may be provided with an aperture (not shown) for receiving a mechanical fastener 510 used for securing each respective material deflection device 122 to the tailgate body 121.
Industrial Applicability
With reference to the drawings, and in operation, extension of the motor 117 from the front portion 106 to the rear portion 109 of the receptacle 103 causes materials 110 to be ejected from the receptacle 103, thereafter spilling over the tailgate body 121 and onto the ground surface 114. Unless otherwise deflected, the width of distribution of the materials 110 will typically match the width of the receptacle 103. The tailgate assembly 118 of the present invention advantageously allows the aforementioned width of material distribution to exceed that of the width of the receptacle 103. As shown best in Fig. 2, as the materials 110 are conveyed over the tailgate body 121, each material
deflection device 122 directs the materials 110 away from the tailgate body centerline 305. In other words, each material deflection device 122 produces a reactionary force against the flow of materials 110, thereby directing the materials 110 towards the side edges 303 of the tailgate body 121.
As should be appreciated, each materials deflection device 122 may be removed from the tailgate body 121, if desired, by removing the mechanical fasteners 502. Alternatively, each material deflection device 122 may be removed by removing the mechanical fasteners 502 associated with the leading spacers 506 and removing the mechanical fasteners 510 associated with the trailing spacers 509. In addition, and as should also be appreciated, the orientation of each material deflection device 122, relative to the tailgate body centerline 305, may be adjusted by utilising the additional attachment structures 505 provided on the tailgate body 121.
Other aspects, objects and advantages of this invention can be obtained from a study of the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims.
