Abstract
A material for making a ceramic filter element that is decomposable when buried in the earth and re-washable with brush means of hard hairs is composed of diatomaceous earth, Igloss (ignition loss material), carboxymethyl cellulose and water. Igloss may be ground into particles of predetermined diameter subject to the caliber of the pores of the ceramic filter element to be made. The material comprises 37-39 wt% diatomaceous earth, 6-8 wt% Igloss, 6-8 wt% CMC and 47-49 wt% water.
Description
COMPOUND MATERIAL FOR MAKING A CERAMIC FILTER
ELEMENT HAVING PORES OF BIG CALIBER The present invention relates to ceramic filter elements and, more specifically, to a compound material adapted for making a ceramic filter element that is re-cashable, and decomposable when buried in the earth. The compound material is composed of diatomaceous earth, Igloss (ignition loss material), CMC, and water. Igloss is ground into particles of predetermined diameter subject to the calibre of the pores of the ceramic filter element to be made.
The pores of conventional ceramic filter elements are tiny and distributed in a high density. When filtering turbid water with a ceramic filter element, the pores of the ceramic filter element tend to be blocked with dirt, mud, or iron chips. In order to eliminate this problem, one or more low-density filter means are disposed in front of posterior active carbon filter element means, ion-exchange resin filter element means, or reverse-osmosis filter element means to remove solid matter over a particular diameter. A pre-filter element for this purpose is made of polypropylene, fibers, or wools.
It is not re-usable when blocked. Further, it does not decompose within a short period of time when put under the weather or buried in the earth after its service.
The present invention has been accomplished under the circumstances in view It is the main object of the present invention
to provide a compound material which is practical for making a re-washable ceramic filter element It is another object of the present invention to provide a compound material, which is practical for making a ceramic filter element that is decomposable when buried in the earth. According to the present invention, the compound material is composed of diatomaceous earth, Igloss, CMC, and water. The diatomaceous earth may be of food grade composed of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium oxide + Potassium oxide, and Igloss. The Igloss may be ground into particles of predetermined diameter subject to the calibre of the pores of the ceramic filter element to be made.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
A compound material for making a ceramic filter element having pores of big caliber in accordance with the present invention is composed of a main material, and a sub-material. The main material is diatomaceous earth. The sub-material is comprised of Igloss, CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose), and water. The proportion of the compound is as follows'
Main material : Diatomaceous earth 37-39-wt%
Sub-material : Igloss 6-8-wt%, CMC 6-8-wt%,
Water 47-49-wt% ; The compound material thus prepared is molded into the a raw ceramic filter element (by injection-molding, casting, or press-molding), and then sintered into the finished product at a high temperature (about 500 -1300 C.
The aforesaid diatomaceous earth is of food grade composed of:
Silicon dioxide (six2) 92-wt% ;
Aluminum oxide (Al203) 1. 5-t% ;
Calcium oxide (CaO) 0. 3-wt%;
Magnesium oxide (MgO) 0. 3-wt%;
Sodium oxide+Potassium oxide (Na20+K. 20) 2.5-wt% ;
Igloss 2.4-wt% ;
The aforesaid Igloss can be wooden powder or plastic powder. Any substance that disappears when sintered can be used as Igloss. The selected Igloss can be ground and screened, so that particles of Igloss of a particular diameter are obtained. The diameter of the particles of Igloss is determined subject to the caliber of the pores of the ceramic filter element to be made.
A ceramic filter element made according to the present invention can be repeatedly washed and brushed; therefore its service life is long. If the pores of the ceramic filter are blocked with dirt and external bodies after a long use, a brush of hard hairs
or vegetable sponge can be used to wash the ceramic filter element with running water Because the main material of the ceramic filter element is diatomaceous earth, it is decomposable when buried in the earth. Therefore, the ceramic filter element does not pollute the environment when disposed of after its service.
While only one embodiment of the present invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that various modifications and changes could be made thereunto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention disclosed.
