Abstract
A cable yoke or bridle 1 is attached at either end of the axle of a vehicle and attached to the vehicle with sacrificial mountings 2 to retain the cable in position in everyday use. At the centre of the cable yoke is an eyelet 3 which is positioned so as to be easily accessible. If the vehicle becomes stuck in the ground a tensile recovery force is applied to the centre eyelet 3 of the cable yoke and this causes the sacrificial mountings 2 to break-away to release the cable 1 to allow the tensile recovery force to act directly on the axle. After use, the couplings can be re-applied.
Description
RECOVERY SYSTEM FOR VEHICLES.
When four wheel drive and other vehicles have to be recovered from mud or difficult terrain another vehicle or winch may be used to pull them out. Conventional recovery techniques involve attaching the cable or rope to a secure position on the chassis of the vehicle and exerting sufficient tension until the vehicle is recovered.
The forces restraining the trapped vehicle act against the tyres and wheels and these forces are resolved through the suspension and chassis of the vehicle (See fig I.).
These forces are very considerable and have two detrimental effects :-If the wheels are immersed in mud below their centre line then the pull of the recovery cable tends to force the wheel into the mud. Secondly the pull of the cable tends to open up the front suspension until all forces are resolved in a tensile load in the front shock absorber strut.
In my invention a cable yoke is attached permanently at each end of the front axle (1) (see Fig 2. ) and the cable is restrained to follow the normal movement of the axle in everyday use by attachment to the chassis by sacrificial mountings (2) and at the centre of the cable is mounted a cable eyelet (3) for attachment to a recovery cable.
In the event, that the vehicle is stuck in mud or other terrain then the cable eyelet is easily accessible at chassis level. The recovery cable is attached (see Fig 3) and a pull is applied. The sacrificial mountings for the cable yoke break and the cable is now pulling directly from the axle, where the forces are resolved only in the wheel, tyre and hub.
The cable pull now acts to pull the wheel up out of the mud or other terrain and none of the recovery forces have to act through the suspension or chassis.,
After recovery the cable is restored to its original position using the sacrificial mountings. Schedule for drawings Figs 1, 2 and 3. 4. Recovery force.

Claims (5)
- CLAIMS : 1 A recovery system for vehicles comprising a yoke or bridle 1 of cable attached to each end 2 of the axle of the vehicle, having an additional accessible eyelet 4 at the middle of the cable for the attachment of an external recovery force 5 and the cable being attached at each side to the vehicle by sacrificial mountings 3, that will restrain the cable to allow it to follow the normal movement of the axle in everyday use, but when the high tensile force 5 of recovery is applied to the cable 1, the mountings 3 will release the cable 1 to allow all the forces of recovery 5 to act directly on the axle.
- 2. A recovery system as described in Claim 1 wherein the sacrificial cable mountings 3 open under the tensile force 5 of recovery to release the cable yoke or bridle 1 to allow the forces of recovery 5 to act directly on the axle of the vehicle.
- 3. A recovery system as described in Claim 1 wherein the sacrificial cable mountings 3 open under the tensile force 5 of recovery to release the cable yoke or bridle 1 to allow the forces of recovery 5 to act directly on the axle of the vehicle, wherein the mountings 3 may be re-used.
- 4. A recovery system as described in Claiml wherein the yoke or bridle 1 is attached to the vehicle by one sacrificial mounting 3, which under the tensile force 5 of recovery will open to release the cable yoke or bridle 1 to allow the forces of recovery 5 to act directly on the axle of the vehicle.
- 5. A recovery system as described in Claiml wherein the yoke or bridle 1 is attached to the vehicle by one sacrificial mounting 3, which under the tensile force 5 of recovery will open to release the cable yoke or bridle 1 to allow the forces of recovery 5 to act directly on the axle of the vehicle, wherein the mounting 3 may be re-used.
