Abstract

A duvet cover 10 comprises a base sheet 12 with pockets 14 which are used to retain opposite edges of a duvet. The top sheet 16 is folded to overlie the base sheet with the pockets therebetween, and fastening means 24 fasten the top sheet over the pockets to enclose the duvet.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Improvements in and relating to duvet covers Description This invention concerns improvements in and relating to duvet covers. Duvet covers generally take the form of a large pocket with an opening at one end that may extend partially or completely across the width of the cover. The opening may be closable by fastening means, such as press-studs or buttons. It can be extremely difficult to insert a duvet into a duvet cover. The larger the duvet, the more unmanageable it becomes. Part of the difficulty lies in getting the duvet to the end of the cover opposite the pocket opening and smoothed out. For some individuals this task is almost impossible without assistance.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved duvet cover. According to this invention there is provided a duvet cover comprising a base sheet, pockets along one pair of opposed edges of the base sheet, a top sheet to overlie the base sheet with the pockets therebetween and means for fastening the top sheet over the pockets.
In a preferred form of the invention, the duvet cover may be formed from a single sheet of fabric. The pockets may be formed from folded over side edges of a sheet of fabric and the top sheet formed from a continuation of the base sheet, preferably reduced in width to match the width of the base sheet on ce the edges thereof have been folded over to form the pockets.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Preferably the pockets are further formed by connecting ends of the pocket forming side edges to the base sheet, typically by stitching.
It will, of course be appreciated that the duvet cover of the invention can be made from separate sheets of fabric that are connected together typically by stitching.
To fasten the top sheet over the pockets and base sheet, preferably fastenings are provided along outer edges of the pockets and of the top sheet. Any suitable fastening means may be provided. Examples of suitable fastening means include press-studs, Velcro (trade mark) and buttons.
The duvet cover of the invention can be laid out with the top sheet extending from the base sheet for a duvet to be fitted into the pockets at either side thereof and then the top sheet folded over and fastened over the base sheet. This can eliminate the difficulty of trying to spread the duvet evenly within the duvet cover because the duvet can remain fully accessible until the top sheet is folded over.
This invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a duvet cover according to the invention shown open and without a duvet; and Figure 2 is a section through the duvet cover of Figure 1 shown closed and containing a duvet.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a duvet cover 10 is formed from a sheet of fabric cut, folded and stitched to provide a base sheet 12, side

pockets 14 and a top sheet 16. The top sheet 16 is a continuation of the base sheet 12. The pockets are formed by folding over flaps along the edges of the base sheet 12 and stitching the ends 18,20 of the pocket forming flaps to the base. The stitching is indicated by broken lines 22.
Along the outer edges of the pockets and across the edge of the base sheet remote from the top sheet are provided at spaced intervals one of the components 24 of press-studs. The other mating components of the press-studs are secured around the three free edges of the top sheetl6. It will, of course be appreciated that other types of suitable fastening means may be used in place of press-studs.
To use the duvet cover 10, the cover is laid out flat with the top sheet folded back from the base sheet, as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings. Then edges of a duvet 28 are inserted into the pockets at either side of the cover 10 and the duvet spread out flat. The top sheet is then folded over the base sheet and pockets and fastened down by means of the press-studs.
Thus, to insert a duvet into a duvet cover of the invention can be achieved without a struggle to spread the duvet out within the cover, which is a main difficulty associated with conventional duvet covers.
