Abstract
236,542. Hall, C. W. July 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Joints with yielding inner part expanded; joints with yielding outer parts compressed.-A joint fitting for thin-walled tubes &c. comprises two co-operating members A', B<1>, Fig. 3, between which the tube C' is positioned, the member A' being formed with a circumferential depression a' having either a continuously curved or angular bottom with filleted edges and corners, and the member B, which is a band of less width than the width of said depression and provided with filleted edges, being capable of being deformed thereby to press the tube wall into and to hold it seated in the depression. Alternatively the members are interchanged. When the ends of two tubes C, D are to be joined, the jointing members A, B are arranged as shown in Fig. 1. In the application to a joint adapted to resist torsional stresses, the depression is formed polygonal in cross-section, and where considerable bending is to be resisted the member A should be elongated and interiorly tapered at one end b. The members A, A' may, if desired, be formed with a plurality of circumferential depressions.
