Abstract

A clip 10 secures a trim panel 12 to a body panel 14 (between which a deployable air bag may be disposed, for example). An identification label 52, eg with a barcode, is attached to the clip 10 via a hole 46 by a breakable member, eg a standard nylon clothing tag 16. When the clip 10 is engaged with an aperture 32 in the body panel 14, the tag 16 is broken by shear force between the edge of the hole 46 in the clip 10 and the edge of the aperture 32. Thus a record is made of the location of each clip and that the clips were adequately engaged. The records can be retained in case the trim panel becomes detached from the body panel in an accident.

Description

2364092 A CLIP FOR CLIPPING A TRIM PANEL TO A BODY PANEL The present
invention relates to a clip for clipping a trim panel to a body panel.
A clip for clipping a trim panel to a body panel has hereto been known particularly in the automobile industry During assembly of automobiles, it is desirable to retain a record that a given trim panel has been adequately secured to a body panel so that if the trim panel detaches from the body panel in an accident and causes injury, it can be established that the trim panel was correctly assembled The record should show the location of each clip which secures the trim panel to the body panel and that the clip in question has been adequately secured It is not possible to obtain such a record with known clips.
A device for providing such a record has hereto been known The device is clipped to a trim panel and is fastened to the body panel with a screw or bolt The torque used to fasten the screw or bolt is recorded and used as a record that the device was adequately secured to the body panel The use of a screw or bolt together with torque detection means is disadvantageous from an efficiency point of view.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a clip for clipping a trim panel to a body panel and which is able to provide a record that the clip was adequately secured to the body panel.
The present invention provides a clip for clipping a trim panel to a body panel, comprising identification means for identifying that the clip is engaged with the body panel, the identification means being connected to the clip by a breakable member which is breakable when the clip is engaged with the body panel to disconnect the identification means from the clip.
The breakable member may be received in an opening in the clip.
Preferably, the clip is adapted to be engaged with an aperture in the body panel and the breakable member may be broken by shear force caused by respective forces applied thereto by an edge of the opening in the clip and an edge of the aperture in the body panel.
Preferably, the portion in which the opening of the clip is located is resilient and abuts the edge of the aperture in the body panel during engagement of the clip with the body panel.
The breakable member may be made from a plastics material.
The identification means preferably comprises a bar code which is readable to identify the location of the clip.
The clip may be attached to a tether for fastening to the trim panel.
The clip may further comprise a tab for locating an air bag in position relative to said trim panel and said body panel.
In order that the present invention may be well understood, an embodiment thereof, which is given by way of example only, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a clip for clipping a trim panel to a body panel; Figure 2 shows the clip of Figure 1 clipping a trim panel to a body panel; and Figure 3 shows a portion of the clip in more detail.
Referring to the Figures, a clip 10 for clipping a trim panel 12 to a body panel 14 is described The clip 10 comprises identification means for identifying that the clip 10 is engaged with the body panel 14, the identification means being connected to the clip 10 by a breakable member 16 which is breakable when the clip 10 is engaged with the body panel 14 to disconnect the identification means from the clip 10.
Only one internal fixing of the trim panel 12 is shown in the Figures.
As shown in more detail in Figure 3, the clip has two flexible tongues 18 which are engageable with a recess or aperture in the fixing to retain the fixing engaged with the clip 10 The fixing also has a catch 20 for resisting disengagement from the clip 10.
The clip 10 has two flanges 22, 24 for engaging with a surface 26 of a body panel and four barbs 28 for engaging with an opposing surface 30 of the body panel 14 for interengaging the body panel 14 when the clip 10 is inserted through an aperture 32 therein.
It is intended that the present invention covers any such arrangement by which the clip clips the trim panel to the body panel and not only the arrangement described above with reference to the Figures.
The embodiment herein described is for clipping a trim panel 12 to a body panel 14 between which is disposed a deployable air bag (not shown).
However, it will be appreciated that the invention is applicable to any clip for clipping a trim panel to a body panel The A-post of an automobile is an example where an air bag may be disposed between a trim panel and body panel In addition to the clip 10 clipping the trim panel 12 to the body panel 14 the clip 10 is also tethered to the trim panel 12 A tether (not shown) is attached to the clip 16 at a tab 34 which extends from a first 22 of the flanges 22, 24 of the clip 10 and which is provided with a hole 36 for receiving the tether.
The clip 10 is adapted to release from the trim panel 12 to allow the air bag to deploy but since the clip 10 is tethered to the trim panel 12 and the clip is engaged with the body panel 14, the trim panel 12 is restrained to the body panel 14 thereby limiting movement of the trim panel 12 in an accident and reducing the damage which could potentially be caused.
The embodiment also has a second tab 38 extending from a second 24 of the flanges 22, 24 of the clip 10 The second tab 38 is for locating the air bag during assembly.
The clip 10 has two resilient members 40, 42 that abut the edge 44 of the aperture 32 of the body panel 14 during insertion of the clip 10 One 42 of the resilient members 40, 42 has an opening 46 therein through which the breakable member 16 is attached to the clip 10.
The breakable member 16 may be made from a plastics material and may conveniently be a standard commercially available clothing tag made from nylon The breakable member 16 has a flange 48, 50 at each end thereof to prevent accidental detachment from the clip 10 An identification means 52 is attached to the breakable member 16 at the end thereof distal from the clip.
Such identification means can take any form suitable for identifying the location of the clip 10 such as a label having a readable bar code imprinted thereon.
As seen in Figure 2, when the clip 10 is inserted into the aperture 32 of the body panel 14, the breakable member 16 is broken by shear force caused by respective forces applied thereto by an edge of the opening in the clip and an edge of the aperture in the body panel The shear force is increased because the resilient member 42 abuts the edge of the aperture of the body panel during insertion of the clip.
Once the breakable member 16 is broken the identification means is used to record the location of the clip 10 If the identification means comprises a bar code the location of the clip can easily be downloaded to a computer record.
