Abstract

A free piston internal combustion engine (10) includes a housing (12) with a combustion cylinder (16) and a compression cylinder (18). A fluid port (50) is disposed in communication with the compression cylinder (18) for transporting a pressurized fluid into the compression cylinder (18). A piston (14) includes a piston head (32) reciprocally disposed within the combustion cylinder (16), a compression head (44) reciprocally disposed within the compression cylinder (18), and a plunger rod (34) attached to each of and interconnecting the piston head (32) and the compression head (44). The compression head (44) includes a plurality of substantially radially extending vanes (62) which are positioned to be at least intermittently disposed in association with the fluid port (50), whereby pressurized fluid which is transported into the compression cylinder (18) from the fluid port (50) causes the piston to rotate.
