Abstract

An electrically heated steering wheel comprises resistive wire coiled around the wheel rim and coupled to a power source via a thermal time switch T. The wire is secured by adhesive silver foil tape, and the power may be supplied via the heated rear windscreen switch or via a dedicated switch. When the ignition is switched on and the ambient temperature is below 15{C, the wire is heated until the temperature exceeds 35{C, at which time switch T opens. Heating resumes when the temperature falls below 15{C.

Description

2362943 1 Heated Vehicle Steering Wheel The invention relates to a
steering wheel which is electrically heated.
The steering wheel is the ideal thing on a cold and frosty morning, after scrapping your windscreen your hands feel very cold, on contact with a nice warm steering wheel you can drive with comfort and ease.
The object of the invention is to heat the steering wheel to a comfortable temperature on cold mornings.
When the temperature is below 151c in the vehicle cabin, the thermal time switch is at a closed position in the steering wheel, when the ignition is turned on, positive feed is supplied via the heated rear windscreen switch, or additional switch, just for the steering wheel, through the thermal time switch to resistive wire coiled around the steering wheel, back through base of thermal time switch then to earth.
When the temperature exceeds 35'c the thermal time switch opens and cuts off positive feed, which stops the heated element. Process is repeated when temperature falls below 15'c. The resistive wire is secured by adhesive silver foil tape. Which also disperses the heat evenly.
The following drawing shows details as explained in the previous paragraph.
Figure 1 illustrates thermal time switch and resistive wiring connected to the steering wheel. It also shows the direction of how the time switch cuts off positive feed.
