Abstract

236,023. Behm, A. June 2, 1924. Determining distances acoustic - ally. - In apparatus for sounding depths by timing or measuring the intensity of echoes, the extent to which the detector is screened by the hull from the outgoing sound can be varied in accordance with the depth to be measured. Arrangements for testing the apparatus are incorporated. Thus a sound emitter located forward on the port side may be used for shallow depths in conjunction with a detector located forward on the starboard side, or for deeper water in eonjunction with a detector located aft on the starboard side. This arrangement is permitted by the fact that less screening is required for shallow than for deep water since weaker sounds can be employed, while it is desirable for the emitter and detector to be closer together in shallow water in order to reduce the obliquity of the sound path. A shorter wave-length may however be used to increase the screening effect in shallow water. According to a modification there may be a single detector and two alternative emitters: or there may be two emitters at different levels on the ship's side, and two detectors similarly arranged. In the arrangement shown in Fia. 4 an emitter G is fixed in the bottom of the ship and an emitter E is mounted in the ship's side in such a way that it can be projected more or less according to the depth, position I being adopted when the bottom is at R, and position II when the bottom is at R2; or both emitter and detector may be adjustably mounted on opposite sides of the ship. For testing purposes the emitter may be mounted at one end of the ship and several detectors E1, E2, E2, may be arranged at intervals along the side, so that the emitted sound will reach them at different times. and the apparatus should indicate corresponding depths : alternatively a conduit S, Fig. 6, inside the ship, may contain spaced detectors E4, E5, E6, adapted to control a timing device when influenced by sound coming from an inload retransmitter G2 adapted to be excited on the emission of a sound at G1. In the case of a submarine, the detectors may be screened by the hull from echoes coming from the surface.
