Abstract

235,916. Laughlin Filter Corporation, (Assignees of Laughlin, W. C.). June 21, 1924, [Convention date]. Density and strainer separators combined.- Solids are separated from liquids in a density separator and the liquids are then passed through a strainer while the solids are removed by a rotary guide in the direction contrarv to the action of the centrifugal forces. The shaft 10 is supported in ball bearings and has a shoulder 15 and a tapering portion provided with a number of radial channels 16 communicating with the central channel 17 which forms the feed channel. Three discs 18, 25, 23 are held on the shaft by the nut 27 ; the circumferential spaces between the discs are closed and a plate 20<a> extends over the front of the disc 18 and is provided with a central outlet 21 for the solids. The disc 23 has outlets 24 for the liquids and the disc 25, liquid channels 26 leading to filtering material packed between screens held in position by a perforated plate 50. The disc 18 covers a number of partitions 31 between spaces which communicate with the main separating chamber 30 on one side and with the auxiliary chamber 32 on the other. A sleeve 13 on the shaft 10 carries radial arms 45 and arms 44 inclined to the radial as shown in Fig. 3. The arms 45 carry paddles 46 to enter the lateral extension 30a of the main chamber 30 to move the separated solids which are then guided to the central opening 21 by the arms 44. The sleeve also carries deflecting members 47 which intercept the incoming material and so prevent it from washing the solids back from the arms 44. The sleeve with its arms 44, 45, 47 rotates at a speed slightly different from that of the separating chamber. The material passes through the central channel 17 and the passages 16, 28 to the chamber 30, where the solids are thrown on to the circumference and the liquids pass on through the filter to the discharge outlets 24. Any solids stopped by the filter will be thrown back to the wall of the chamber 30. The mass of solids is moved by the paddles 46 and brought to the discharge opening 21 by the arms 44.
