Abstract

A ladder attached at a first end to a weight bearing axle (4) housed in a container (1) made from a metal alloy, which may be fitted to the outside of a window using bolts. Also attached to the weight bearing axle, via a rope (5) is a harness (6). The ladder, comprising a rope (7) and metal alloy rungs (8) is attached at a second end to the inside of the container lid (9). In use, a catch (3) on the container is released and the lid falls to the ground extending the ladder.

Description

2359108 1 SELF ACTIVATING FIRE ESCAPE This invention relates to a portable
Fire Escape System which consists of an alloy casing which holds a rope ladder with alloy rungs, plus a rope and harness, all of which fit to a weight bearing axle inside the alloy casing.
Fire Escapes of a similar existence have disadvantage of the fact that they have to be stored internally of a room in a building. The Self Activating Fire Escape has the advantage of being fitted externally, below or to the side of a window, thus allowing a quick escape route.
The object of this invention is to provide a quick but safe escape route from a fire for one or more people using the ladder and safety harness.
2 Accordingly, this invention provides a fire escape which is made up of a rope and alloy ladder plus a rope and safety harness, housed inside an alloy box with which is fitted to an external wall with stress bearing bolts.
Preferably, the Self Activating Fire Escape is made of an alloy or plastic type material capable of withstanding a measured weight bearing for safety.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which; 3 Figure 1 Shows a Frontal view of the Self Activating Fire Escape in the open position. Figure 2 Shows a Side view in the closed position, but showing the axle stopend and release catch. Figure 3 Shows a top view in the closed position, but showing the release catch and axle stop-end.
4 As shown in Figure 1, the Fire Escape comprises of an alloy easing (1) in the open position showing the rope (7) and alloy rungs (8) and the rope (5) and harness (6) in the ready for escape position.
The rope (7) and alloy rung (8) ladder along with the rope (5) and harness (6) are fitted to the main weight bearing axle (4) which itself is fitted into the alloy casing (1) and held in place by the stopend (10) As in Figure 1, the rope (7) and alloy rung (8) ladder are fixed to the internal part of the lid (9). This enables the ladder to be pulled downwards.
Figure 2 shows the alloy casing in the closed position showing the release catch (3) and axle stop-end (10). This side view of the Fire Escape also shows the holes (11) to hold the stress bolts when fixed to a wall.
The alloy casing (1) is fitted to a wall using stress bolts. When activated the release catch (3) is pulled, thus allowing the lid (9) which holds the bottom of the rope (7) and rung (8) ladder to fall to the ground, pulling the rope (7) and rung (8) ladder in a downward motion as shown in Figure 1.
The rope (7) and rung (8) ladder plus the rope (5) and harness (6) are all fixed to the main stress bearing axle (4). The Fire Escape is now in the activated position thus allowing a means of escape as shown in Figure 1.
