Abstract
235,900. Colas, J. E., and Bertault, G. M. June 21, 1924, [Convention date]. Capillary-action lubricating.-A pulley having a hollow interior 4 for lubricant has radial tubes 9 projecting inwardly from the peripheral groove 1 and containing wicks 11 whose inner ends surround the hub 5, the outer ends of the tubes 9 being closed by conical plugs 10 having screwed plugs 21 therein. The lubricant level XX is such that when the pulley is stationary lubricant cannot enter the tubes 9. When the pulley stops running lubricant flowing down the pulley sides saturates the inner ends of the wicks 11 and passes by capillarity towards the plugs 10, and thence along the threads of the plugs 21 to the groove 1. Lubricant also passes along the threads of the hub 5 to the side faces of the pulley from whence it runs on to the shaft 6. The shaft adjacent the middle plane of the pulley may be lubricated by lubricant which passes along the threads of a plug 20, or the hub 5 may be in two parts having a space between them which may be left clear or filled with a felt or like absorbent washer. The slackness of the threads of the plugs 20, 21 may be varied to regulate the flow of lubricant. Lubricant inlet and air outlet apertures are closed by spring-controlled ball valves 14, 18 in tubes 12, 16 respectively. Instead of opening into the groove 1, as shown, the filling and air outlet apertures may be made in the pulley sides 2, 3.
