Rack-propelling gear.--In a rack railway system means are provided on the locomotive which will co-operate with the main or auxiliary rails to rotate the rack pinion at such a speed that it will mesh with the rack without shock. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the rack pinion 16 carries friction wheels 18 adapted to engage spring-supported auxiliary rails 19 before it reaches the rack, so that these rails rotate the pinion at the proper speed for meshing with the rack when the latter is reached. The wheels are of the same diameter as the pitch circle of the pinion. The pinion and friction wheels may be spring mounted in their truck instead of the auxiliary rails being spring supported. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the rack pinion 13 is mounted on a hollow shaft 18 connected by a universal joint 25 to a shaft 16 carrying a friction wheel 17 which can be brought down into engagement with the ordinary rail 10 to rotate the pinion before the rack is reached. The rack pinions are driven by electric motors through gearing; the motors may be started before the rack is reached, the friction wheels acting to govern the speed of the pinions. The locomotive may comprise an adhesion wheel driving truck and a rack driving truck, the two trucks being coupled together and driven by separate motors. According to the Provisional Specification, the end section of the rack may be spring mounted.
