Description
2356649 FIRE-RESISTANT SANDWICH PLATE The present invention relates to a
fire-resistant sandwich plate, and in particular to a fire-resistant sandwich plate consisting of first and second covering plates between which a substantially lighter core is disposed.
Fire-resistant plates are used, for example, as floor or wall plates in railway or tram carriages, wherein different plate constructions are known. In particular, various requirements are expected of floor plates, e.g. good fire resistance, high resistance to compression and stability, low weight and low cost, and these requirements are not satisfactorily fulfilled in combination by conventional plates.
For example, fire-resistant plates formed from a plurality of wooden plates with the direction of their grains crossing are normally sufficiently resistant to compression, but are also relatively heavy. Wooden plates assembled so that the directions of their grains cross are hereinafter referred to as "closed" plates.
On the other hand, so-called sandwich plates exist which comprise layers of different materials. In order to save weight, a substantially lighter core is disposed between two covering plates. The known sandwich plates are either insufficiently resistant to compression and/or not completely fire-resistant, or have a fire resistant compression- resistant core which is relatively expensive.
With regard to the disadvantages of the aforementioned hitherto-known plates, at least the preferred embodiments of the invention have the object of providing a fire-resistant plate of the type mentioned above which combines good fire-resistant properties, high resistance to compression, stability and low weight, and is also cheap to produce.
According to a f irst aspect of the invention, there is provided a fire-resistant sandwich plate with a first and a second covering plate, between which a substantially lighter core is disposed, characterised in that the covering plates each comprise at least three closed layers of wood, glued to one another, and are formed so as to be fire-resistant, and that the core is enclosed by fire-resistant material.
Since the core is surrounded by fire-resistant material, it is not necessary to make it fire-proof. In this way, it can be produced more cheaply and/or with lower weight. The fact that the covering plates have at least three glued, closed layers of wood stabilises the sandwich plate and increases its soundproofing properties in comparison to metal plates.
The core advantageously has a density of a maximum of 300 kg /M3, preferably a maximum of 160 kg /M3 and a modulus of elasticity in the transverse direction to the covering plates of 1000 N/MM2, preferably at least 4000 N/mm2. In preferred embodiments, the core may comprise, for example, balsa wood, a foam, which may be formed from, for example, polyetherimide, polyurethane or PVC, or a honeycomb plate, for example formed from aluminium or aramid. In this way, high resistance to compression can be attained.
In a preferred embodiment, an edge strip, which is formed to be fire-resistant and comprises at least three layers of glued wood, is disposed around the core between the first and the second covering plate, and is preferably glued to the two covering plates. The.entire sandwich plate thus substantially only comprises layers of glued wood and the core.
The fire-resistant effect of the covering pla'tes and the edge strip is preferably produced by the use of a fire-retardant adhesive, preferably phenol resin adhesive. Inorganic, non-corrosive salts may be added to the adhesive. Alternatively, the layers of wood can be suitably treated.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a top elevation of a first embodiment of the fire-resistant sandwich plate; and Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectional elevation of the fire-resistant sandwich plate along line A-A in Fig. 1, wherein a portion of the sandwich plate is cut away in the centre.
The represented sandwich plate contains a first covering plate 2, a second covering plate 3, a core 1 disposed in between, and an edge strip 4 disposed between the first covering plate 2 and the second covering plate 3 and surrounding the core 1. The first covering plate 2 comprises five layers of wood 21-25, which are glued together, whilst the second covering layer 3 comprises five layers of wood 31-35, which are glued together. The covering plate 2 is glued onto the edge strip 4, which comprises six layers of wood 41-46, from above and the second covering layer 3 is glued on from below. Two adjacent layers of wood 21-25, 31-35, 41-46 of the covering plate 2, the covering plate 3 and the edge strip 4 each cross in the direction of the wood's grain.
Phenol resin adhesive, which has fire-retardant properties, is used as an adhesive. The fire-retardant effect is produced by inorganic, non-corrosive salts which are added to the adhesive bath.
Depending on the material used, fire classification S3 or even S4 according to DIN 5510 Part 2 can be attained for the entire sandwich plate.
The core 1 is completely enclosed by the covering plate 2, the covering plate 3 and the edge strip 4, and therefore does not need to be formed to be fire resistant. In the present case it comprises polyetherimide foam but can, for example, comprise polyurethane foam or PVC foam, balsa wood or a honeycomb plate comprising e.g. aluminium or aramid. Its purpose 4 is to guarantee high resistance to compression whilst having low weight. It will be appreciated that materials other than those mentioned above may be used to form the core.
In the present example, the core 1 is enclosed between the covering plates 2, 3 and the edge strip 4 formed of a plurality of layers of wood 41-46.
Naturally, it is also conceivable that it is enclosed by another fire-resistant material such as e.g. a foam or a thin covering strip.
