Abstract

235,623. McGhee, G. March 15, 1924. Railway-carriage doors and the like, fastening automatically.-An automatically operated fastening means for the doors of railway coaches is operated through a pair of cams on the running wheels axle, the cams alternately advancing and retracting a pair of pivoted levers carrying weighted fingers which hold the spring-shooting means for the bolts out of action until the speed of rotation of the cams is such that the inertia of the weighted fingers results in their failure to retain the spring shooting-means. Means are provided for operating the bolts on one side of the coach only if desired, and for holding the levers out of contact with the cams for long-distance running. The cams A, A<1> are oppositely mounted on the axle B and alternately advance levers E, E<1> pivoted at D in the bracket C and held in contact with the cams by springs (not shown). The levers E, E<1> are each provided with a finger F, F<1> counterweighted at F<2>. The horizontal part of this advanced finger F holds up a bracket I fixed to the hollow shaft O, while the lever E<1> recedes. The finger F' holds the bracket while the lever E recedes. When the cams are rotating rapidly due to the speed of the train, the inertia of the weights F<2> causes the fingers F, F' to tilt so that they fail to hold up the bracket I which is then rotated by a torsion spring G and with it the shaft 0. In rotating, the shaft 0 engages pins N<1> on loose cranked arms K inserted in the ends of the shaft arms K<1> actuating the bolts H to lock the doors by rods J and cranks R<1>. When the train slows down, the fingers F, F<1> assume the position in which their long parts are again horizontal and engage the bracket I to lift it to a vertical position and allow the bolts H to drop into inoperative position. When it is desired to operate the bolts on one side only of the coach, a cord M is pulled, rocking a lever L to hold the bolts on the other side permanently locked. The slots N in the shaft O permits of the necessary play to allow the bolts of one side to be released while those of the other side remain locked. For long distance running where the constant friction of the cams on the levers would cause undue wear, an arm O<1> turning on a boss P and operated by a cord Q is provided so that the levers can be lifted away from the cams after the bolts have been automatically shot.
