Abstract
The charity collection device is a means by which users of vending machines can donate to charity any change they would normally receive from the purchase of goods / services offered by the machines. It comprises at least two "choice" options 2 that allow the user to choose between accepting the change offered after purchasing the goods / services or donating that change to charity. It would also have a charity collection box 7 and/or a means of recording, within the internal electrical circuitry 4 of the machine, the donations given by users of the vending machine.
Description
2355102 CHARITY COLLECTION DEVICE The invention relates to a device
designed to allow change (usually in the form of coinage) to be donated to charity from vending machines.
A significant part of charity collection comes from donations of loose change in people's pockets. However, approaching large numbers of people and asking them to donate their loose change is relatively time consuming, relies on large numbers of charity volunteers and can induce mistrust and a feeling of awkwardness in those asked to donate.
The objective of this invention is to allow an easier, more efficient and less confrontational method for people to donate their small change to charity. Another objective is to allow a charity / charities to approach a greater number of potential donators. This can be achieved by providing a device (such as a lever / button / knob) that will allow any change from a vending machine, that would normally be returned, to be diverted to a charity collection apparatus within, or attached to, the machine.
The device would need to be adapted specifically to each type of vending machine it was used on. The mechanical and possibly electrical circuitry of the vending machine type (e.g. snacks, cold drinks, hot drinks, parking meters) should be adapted to give consumers the choice of collecting their change or donating it to the designated charity.
A typical embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: - Figure I shows an example of the front console of a vending machine.
Figure 2 shows a cross section (in profile) of a hypothetical vending machine illustrating the idea of the charity collection device.
As shown in Figure I the console panel must essentially have-, i. A display message I asking what the customer wants to do with his / her change.
ii. At least two "choice" buttons / levers / knobs 2 with the options of donating the change to a charity / charities or returning the change to the customer.
Following the insertion of money in to the coin / note slot 3 the internal mechanics of each vending machine must have a control unit within the electrical / mechanical circuitry 4 that responds to the choice buttons / levers / knobs 2 and then either diverts the change to the charity collection box 7 or returns it to the customer in the coin return orifice 5. The price of the product / service bought would be collected in the normal sales collection box 6.
The collection box 7 may have its own separate access via a lock of sorts.
I The charity collection box 7 need not be separate from the sales collection box 6 but instead the internal electrical circuitry 4 may be used to record the amounts donated to charity.

Claims (4)

- 2 A charity collection device as in claim I that electronically records the individual and / or cumulative donations.
- 3 A charity collection device as in claim I or claim 2 that has a separate access point to collected donations from those monies received for purchase of the goods services provided by the vending machine.
