Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Terminal for Purchase and Redemption of Lottery Tickets This invention relates to a terminal for the purchase and redemption of lottery tickets.
The operation of large scale lotteries is well known and one highly successful example of such a lottery is the British National Lottery.
Lotteries generally and the British National Lottery in particular are operated using a network of secure data entry terminals.
Users purchase lottery tickets over the counter at retail premises and details of the transaction such as the lottery numbers selected by the user are input into the retailers network terminal. The numbers selected and other details are then recorded in a central computer system and a ticket confirming the date, time, numbers selected and the lottery draw is printed and given to the user.
When a user believes that they have won a prize they can take their lottery ticket to a retail outlet for it to be entered into the network terminal so that the win and the amount can be confirmed and verified.
There are a number of problems with this arrangement for the lottery operator.
Firstly, access to the lottery is limited to participating retail premises and times when these premises are open. These limitations will deter some potential lottery users.
Another disadvantage is that a proportion of the lottery income is taken by the retailers hosting the network terminals, reducing the operating profit of the lottery.
Where the lottery is run for a profit by a commercial organisation like the British National Lottery this will reduce the lottery operators profits. In other lottery systems which are not run by an operator taking a profit the reduction in operating profits in the lottery will
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
reduce the funds generated by the lottery which are generally directed to charitable causes or the government.
This invention is intended to overcome these problems at least in part.
An automated lottery terminal device according to the invention is shown in the accompanying figures. One figure shows a front view of the automatic lottery terminal while the other figure shows a perspective view.
The general concept of the automatic lottery terminal according to the invention is to provide an unmanned lottery terminal connected to the lottery computer network and allowing users to pay for lottery entries and print out tickets or receipts confirming their entry and also to allow users to confirm and verify that they have won and the amount won.
Preferably, the automatic lottery terminal should also allow payment to be made for at least some wins.
The automated lottery terminal is connected to the lottery computer system in a similar manner to the conventional manned lottery terminals.
Manned lottery terminals have been in use for many years either located in retail outlets also having other commercial functions or located in dedicated retail outlets such as lottery booths and the like. The necessary equipment, communication links and computer software to allow secure and verifiable transfer of data between lottery terminals and a lottery network to allow the selection of lottery numbers and purchase to be confirmed and recorded and to allow wins to be confirmed and verified are very well known in convention lottery terminals and accordingly this aspect of the automatic lottery terminal will not be discussed in detail here.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
As can be seen with reference to the figures the automatic lottery terminal according to the invention comprises slots to allow payment to be made by inputting money, preferably in the form of notes and coins, a keypad allowing the necessary data to be provided for a lottery entry to be made and a visual display screen.
In order to purchase a lottery ticket the user inputs data to make the necessary selections such as which lottery is to be played, which draw the selection of numbers is being made for and lottery numbers selected using the keypad prompted by queries displayed on the screen. The user selections can be re-displayed on the screen and confirmed through the keypad as required during or at the end of this operation.
The payment required for the selected lottery entries must be made using notes and/or coins through the note and coin slots.
Once the necessary selection and payment has been made the lottery entry information will be sent by the automated lottery terminal to the main lottery network and a receipt/lottery ticket will be printed out for the user through a main ticket dispenser.
The keypad may be a conventional alphanumeric keypad with additional function buttons such as enter, yes or no or may be a dedicated keypad with separate buttons for different lottery related functions and number input.
Preferably the terms and conditions under which the lottery is played are displayed on the automatic lottery terminal. However, in order to guard against the possibility that these terms and conditions are obliterated or altered it may be preferred to also display the terms and conditions on screen during each user transaction and to require that the user specifically confirm on the keypad that the terms and conditions have been read and understood.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
The desirability of such on screen confirmation and the extent of the terms and conditions displayed will depend on local law applicable to the lottery or lotteries to which the automated lottery terminal is connected.
The necessary equipment to receive and verify the value of notes and coins and to print the ticket or receipt are both well known and readily available, for example from railway station automatic ticket machines which take cash and print tickets automatically and manned lottery terminals.
In addition to the use of note and coin slots the automatic lottery terminal may also allow payment by credit or debit cards in which case a suitable card input slot and reading mechanism will be required. Such mechanisms and the necessary systems to allow reading and verification are well known in the field of ATM machines.
The offering of card payment may be limited by legal constraints in some jurisdictions and accordingly no card reader is shown in the drawings.
In addition to dispensing tickets and/or receipts the automatic lottery terminal is also able to read lottery tickets and communicate with the overall lottery network to confirm and verify whether they are winning tickets and the amount won. In order to do this a lottery ticket input slot and reader is provided. In the illustrated embodiment the main ticket dispensing slot is also used to input lottery tickets for reading. When a lottery ticket is placed in the read slot it is read by a suitable ticket reading mechanism, details are supplied to the main lottery network and the results displayed on the screen. Usually the screen display will either be that the ticket is not a winning ticket or that the ticket is a winning ticket and the amount of the win. Further messages may be displayed on screen as required to indicate such situations as the draw to which the ticker applies not having taken place, the ticket cannot be
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
read or the ticket cannot be reconciled with a recorded lottery transaction and so cannot be verified.
Where a lottery ticket is a winning ticket and the win is below a preset threshold the user will be asked on the screen whether they wish to take the win immediately as cash or to have the ticket returned. If the win is above the threshold the user will only be given the option of ticket return.
Where the user takes the payment in immediate cash the win will be paid in cash through a payment slot and the making of the payment will be communicated to the lottery network. The ticket will then be endorsed to show that a payment has been made, preferably together with identification of the paying terminal and time and amount of payment, and the endorsed ticket returned to the user.
If the win amount is greater than the preset threshold, or alternatively if the terminal has no funds or insufficient funds to make the payment, the user will be advised on the screen and the ticket returned. The user can then obtain payment by the usual procedure for large wins or from another terminal as appropriate.
It is preferred that under all circumstances lottery tickets submitted to the automatic lottery terminal for reading will be returned at the end of the transaction in order to allow the user to use an alternative procedure if they do not accept the response they are given by the automatic lottery terminal or if the automatic lottery terminal is for whatever reason unable to read the ticket. However, optionally the retention of tickets for disposal may be offered as an option subject to confirmation by the user.
As explained above, a card reader may be provided to allow card payment.
However, even where this facility is not provided a card reader may still be provided in order
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
LO allow a user to automatically pay lottery winnings into an account identified by the card.
Such a transaction would be carried out by the user by inputting data through the keypad prompted by instructions displayed on the screen.
The discussion above refers to the operation of the automatic lottery terminal with a periodic lottery allowing number selection. The automatic lottery terminal according to the invention may be able to receive payment for and dispense instant lottery tickets as well as allowing entries into such a periodic lottery. When this is the case, the above description of the automatic lottery terminal for a penodic lottery will be applicable to instant lottery ticket transactions except that some features may be substituted or omitted depending on the details of the periodic lottery and instant lottery tickets. For example, number selection will not normally be required for instant lottery tickets and selection of a draw date will either not be required or could be replaced by selection of an instant lottery ticket type.
Because of the different sizes and materials of instant lottery tickets and normal lottery tickets in the British National Lottery it is preferred to provide separate dispensers for the normal lottery tickets and instant tickets as shown in the figures. Also, where the ticket dispensing slots double as ticket input slots to allow ticket reading or winning tickets to be identified and verified it is simpler to arrange the necessary ticket dispensing and input and reading mechanisms if the two types of ticket have separate slots.
Where the automatic lottery terminal dispenses instant lottery tickets it is preferred that the automatic lottery terminal also be able to read instant lottery tickets to identify winning tickets and pay out wins below a threshold similarly to the main lottery tickets.
However for some types of instant lottery tickets this may not be possible.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Where the automatic lottery terminal is used to sell instant lottery tickets as well as main lottery entries the keypad and on-screen prompts will allow instant lottery tickets and main lottery tickets to be selected as options.
Only the external front of an automatic lottery terminal according to the invention is shown in the figures and it will be understood that various internal mechanisms and electronic control equipment will be required. It is believed that all of the necessary control equipment, printing equipment, dispensing equipment and reading equipment as well as the necessary electronics and control software are readily available in pre-existing automatic teller machines (ATM's) ticket purchase machines and the like.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a keypad is shown and used. This keypad could be augmented or replaced by a touch-sensitive screen if desired.
In the illustrated embodiments the automatic lottery terminal is formed inside a recess in a wall, has an exposed surface substantially of stainless steel and is illuminated for ease of use. This is one preferred option providing ease of use and considerable security against vandalism or theft. However, the precise external appearance and materials and location of the automatic lottery terminal may all be varied as required or desired in practice.
Similarly to ATM machines a wide range of possible external physical appearances and locations could be used.
The illustrated embodiment shows a lottery machine intended for use with the British National Lottery and is surrounded by an illuminated ring bearing the name and logo of the British National Lottery. Obviously where the automatic lottery terminal was intended for use with other lotteries suitable wording and logos would be substituted. The use of an
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
illuminated ring is useful to display advertising material and clearly identify the location and nature of the automatic lottery terminal but is not essential.
The selection and functions options open to the user in operation through the keypad and prompted by on-screen prompts depends upon the precise nature and operation of the lottery.
Preferably the automatic lottery terminal is able to give change where the payment made is greater than the cost of the requested transactions.
Preferably the automatic lottery terminal is able to process wins below the local payment threshold as a credit and to allow the credit to be split between cash payment or payment for further lottery transactions as requested by the user using the keypad.
Where payment of wins to an account identified by a card read by the automatic lottery terminal is possible there may be a different higher threshold for payments into accounts than for cash payments.
The automatic lottery terminal may be programmed to operate so that payment is required before lottery transactions are selected with unused credit being refunded or to require transactions to be selected and then payment made or may allow either option.
Normally the automatic lottery terminal will accept cash payment and make payments of winnings only in a single currency. However, the making of payments of the automatic lottery terminal in multiple different currencies is possible and this facility could be provided if desired.
Optionally the automatic lottery terminal may include a speaker. The speaker can be used to give verbal instructions or information or audible prompts to supplement the information and instructions displayed on the screen.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Further, in a preferred option, in addition to a loud speaker being used to provide information, instructions and prompts a loud speaker and microphone are both provided. The microphone and speaker allow voice communication with a manned help or assistance point on request by the user. This communication with the help or advice point could be requested by the user by pressing a dedicated help button or could be requested using the keypad or touch screen.
Where user interaction with the automatic lottery terminal is carried out by user selection from on-screen menus, communication with the help point may be included in some or all menus as a selectable option.
