PATENTS ACT 1977 A9884GB Title: Wheel Assembly Description of Invention
This invention relates to a wheel assembly.
It is known to provide a wheel assembly which includes a generally circular rim onto which a tyre may be fitted, and flanges co-axially mounted around the rim to seat and retain the tyre. For larger wheels such as those used on off-road vehicles and machines, at least one such flange may be dismountable from the rim so that the flange is adapted to be engaged with the rim after a tyre has been fitted thereon and to seat and retain the tyre in position on the rim. The flange is retained by a bead seat band which co-operates with the wheel flange and is retained by a sprang lock ring in a groove of the rim.
In one such known wheel assembly, the rim is provided with a circumferential groove, and the lock ring includes a correspondingly shaped, circumferential locking protrusion. Once the tyre has been fitted on the rim, typically against a flange at one axial end of the rim, the dismountable flange is positioned at an opposite axial end of the rim, and the locking protrusion is forced into the groove. When the locking protrusion is thus engaged, the dismountable flange is retained with the tyre between the flanges.
Such a lock ring is difficult to insert into its groove on the rim, particularly in an operational situation, as it has to be stretched over the axial end of the wheel rim, and once the wheel assembly is assembled, it is difficult to dismantle to change the tyre.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide a wheel assembly adapted to retain a tyre, the wheel assembly including a generally circular wheel rim, with a dismountable, generally circular, flange coaxially arranged around a radially outwardly facing surface of said rim, there being a flange retainer adapted to co-operate with the wheel rim and the flange to restrain 2 axial movement of the flange relative to the wheel rim, characterised in that the wheel rim and the flange retainer co-operate by each having interengaging threaded means.
Thus no lock ring is required.
In one example, the wheel rim may have a first threaded portion which may extend around the entire circumference of the wheel rim and may interengage with a second threaded portion provided on the flange retainer. The first threaded portion may be provided on the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim, and the flange retainer may have a radially inwardly facing surface which is provided with the second threaded portion.
The flange may engage with a tyre mounted co-axially around the radially outwardly facing surface of the wheel rim and restrain axial movement of the tyre relative to the wheel rim.
Thus, according to the invention, once a tyre and flange have been fitted on the wheel rim, the second threaded portion of the flange retainer may be engaged with the first threaded portion of the wheel rim and the flange retainer rotated about the wheel axis until the flange retainer is securely engaged with the rim and the flange retainer engages with the flange to restrain axial movement of the tyre and flange. The wheel assembly may subsequently be dismantled more easily than in conventional arrangements in which a lock ring has to be forcibly disengaged from the rim, and with less risk of damaging the flange retainer, by counterrotation of the retainer until the second threaded portion is released from interengagement with the first threaded portion.
The flange retainer may be integral with the flange but preferably is separate from the flange. In the latter case, the flange retainer may include a projection extending radially outwardly of the rim, adapted to co-operate with the flange when the retainer is fitted on the rim.
According to a second aspect of the invention, we provide a method of assembling a wheel assembly, the wheel assembly including a generally 3 circular wheel rim provided with a first threaded portion on a radially outwardly facing surface of the rim, a generally circular, dismountable flange, and a flange retainer provided with a second threaded portion on a radially inwardly facing surface, the method including mounting the flange co-axially around the radially outwardly facing surface of the wheel rim, engaging the second threaded portion of the flange retainer with the first threaded portion of the wheel rim, and relatively rotating the flange retainer about a wheel axis until the flange retainer engages with and retains the flange in an operative position.
A tyre may be fitted on the wheel assembly assembled by the method of the second aspect of the invention. In this case the method may include mounting a tyre co-axially around the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim, mounting the flange co-axially around the radially outwardly facing surface of the wheel rim, interengaging the second threaded portion of the flange retainer with the first threaded portion of the wheel rim, and rotating the flange retainer relative to the rim about a wheel axis until the flange retainer engages with and retains the flange in the operative position.
According to a third aspect of the invention we provide a method of removing a tyre fitted on a wheel assembly, the wheel assembly including a generally circular wheel rim provided with a first threaded portion on a radially outwardly facing surface of the rim, a generally circular, dismountable flange co-axially arranged around the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim, and a flange retainer provided with a second threaded portion on a radially inwardly facing surface, the second threaded portion of the flange retainer being interengaged with the first threaded portion of the wheel rim, the tyre being coaxially arranged around the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim, the method including rotating the flange retainer about a wheel axis to disengage the second threaded portion and the first threaded portion, removing the flange from around the rim and removing the tyre from around the rim.
4 The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure I is a radial cross-sectional view of part of a wheel assembled according to the invention, Figure 2 is a detailed cross-sectional view of part of a wheel rim and flange retainer according to the invention, Referring now to the figures, there is shown part of a wheel assembly 1, including a generally circular rim 4, a generally circular dismountable first flange 6 co-axially arranged around a radially outwardly facing surface of the rim 4, and a flange retainer 9 also arranged around the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim 4.
The wheel rim 4 is provided, near a first axial end 13 thereof, with a first threaded portion 5 which extends along the radially outwardly facing surface and around the circumference of the rim 4. The flange retainer 9 is provided with a second threaded portion 10 which extends around a radially inwardly facing surface 11 of the flange retainer 9. The radially inwardly facing surface 11 lies generally adjacent to the rim 4 and the second threaded portion 10 is engaged with the first threaded portion 5 provided on the wheel rim 4. Thus axial movement of the flange retainer 9 relative to the wheel rim 4 is restrained. The flange retainer 9 does not extend axially along the entire length of the rim 4.
The first wheel flange 6 is engaged with the flange retainer 9. The flange retainer 9 is provided with a lip 12 which extends from an end of the flange retainer 9 positioned adjacent to the first axial end 13 of the rim 4, radially outwardly of the wheel rim 4. The lip 12 prevents the first flange 6 being removed from the rim 4 by movement of the first flange 6 axially over the first end 13 of the wheel rim 4.
A second 7 wheel flange is co-axially arranged around the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim 4, at a second axial end 14 of the rim 4.
The second wheel flange 7 is engaged with a lip 8 provided at the second axial end 14 of the rim 4, the lip 8 extending radially outwardly from the second end 14 of the rim 4.
A tyre 2 is mounted on the wheel assembly 1, co-axially around the radially outwardly facing surface of the rim 4, between the two flanges 6 & 7.
There is a wheel disc 3 attached to a radially inwardly facing surface of the rim 4, by which the wheel assembly I may be attached to a vehicle.
In order to assemble and fit a tyre to the wheel assembly I according to the invention, it is necessary to carry out the following steps. The second flange 7 is mounted on the rim 4, followed by the tyre 2 and first flange 6. Mounting is facilitated by sliding these over the first end 13 of the rim 4. The flange retainer 9 is then placed over the first edge 13, the threaded portions 5 and 10 engaged and the Range retainer 9 rotated relative to the wheel rim 4 about a wheel axis until the threaded portions 5 and 10 are interengaged, and the retainer 9 is positioned at the required position axially along the rim 4. The tyre 2 may then be inflated.
When inflated, the tyre 2 forces the two flanges 6 & 7 into engagement with the two lips 12 & 8 respectively, and thus axial movement of the tyre 5 relative to the wheel rim 4 is restrained.
To prevent the flange retainer 9 rotating relative to the wheel rim 4 in use, measures are provided to lock the flange retainer 9 against such rotation. Two locking protrusions 15 and 16 extend from the rim 4 and retainer 9 respectively, outwardly of the wheel rim 4 and generally normal to the disc 3. The two locking protrusions 15 and 16 each include a radial groove, and when the grooves are aligned, with the flange retainer 9 in a desired axial position on the rim 4, the locking protrusions 15 and 16 are rigidly connected by a connector 17, thus restraining rotation of the retainer 9 with respect to the rim 4. The connector 17 has a cruciform shape and is wedged into the grooves of the two locking protrusions 15 and 16 after assembling the wheel, a laterally 6 extending portion of the connector 17 being wedged between the two locking protrusions 15 and 16.
The first Range 6 may be separate from the retainer 9, as described above, or alternatively, the first flange 6 may be fixed to or integral with the retainer 9. The second flange 7 may be separate from the rim 4 or may be permenantly fixed to the lip 8, by welding for example.
The invention is particularly useful when applied to large wheels for offroad vehicles and machines, tractors for example, but may also be applied to wheels for any other vehicle where a wheel assembly including a rim 4 and dismountable flange 6 is used.
The invention is not restricted to use with wheels configured exactly as described above: for examples, the shape of the rim 4 or flanges 6 and 7 may vary without materially affecting the scope of the invention.
The threaded portions could be provided elsewhere on the rim 4 or flange retainer 9, and need not extend around the entire circumference of the wheel assembly 1.
A tyre fitting on a wheel assembly of the invention may or may not have an inner tube.
The disc 3 may be permenantly or releasably attached to the rim 4.
In the present specification "comprise" means "Includes or consists of' and "comprising" means "including or consisting of'.
