Abstract

A press-up apparatus has a platform 10 and two adjustable hand grips 12 which can be located in a series of holes/sockets 14 in the platform 10. One hand grip 14 can utilise two sockets to secure it. Splines on the shafts 16 of the hand grips 12 may cooperate with the sockets 14 to more firmly hold the hand grips 12. When not in use, the hand grips 12 may be stored in a recess in the platform. The handgrips 12 may have a non-slip foam covering. The platform may have non-slip floor pads 18 at each corner of the platform body.

Description

2354956 ADUSTABLE PRESS-UP APPARATUS This invention relates to an
adjustable apparatus for performing press- ups.
The press-up is a well known exercise for working and developing strength and stamina most specifically in the pectoral muscles of the chest and tricep muscles of the arm.
The press up is limited in its ability to work the pectorals and triceps as once the nose touches the floor ftirther elbow flexion is uncomfortable if not impossible, thus acting as the limiting factor in the range of movement available to the muscles and joints being exercised. A further limitation of a conventional press-up is that hand positioning is uncomfortable particularly when performing press-ups on the knuckles to increase the range of the exercise. According the present invention there is provided an adjustable press-up apparatus comprising a raised platform with a series of holes/sockets into which two raised handgrips slot securely. One handgrip utilises two of the sockets at any one time and they can be positioned parallel to the long edge of the platform or perpendicular to it. The handgrips being adapted to slide in and out of the sockets but sit firmly in the socket when in use. The handgrips are covered in foam padding for comfort and to facilitate grip. The shafts of the handgrip are splined and the sockets in the platform are grooved to facilitate a firmer fit. The four comers of the platform that rest on the floor have anti-slip patches. The handgrips can be stored flat in recesses on the surface of the platform.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of reference to the accompanying drawing in which:Figure I shows in perspective, the apparatus with the handgrips positioned perpendicular to the long edge of the apparatus: Figure 2 illustrates in cross-section one handgrip in the parallel position to the long edge of the apparatus: Figure 3 illustrates a birds eye view showing the apparatus with the handgrips laying flat 2 alongside it. This drawing also illustrates the two handgrip storage recesses in the apparatus. Referring to the drawing the apparatus comprises a platform 10 and two handgrips 12 that slot into sockets 14 the handgrips being held firm in the sockets by virtue of splines on the Shafts 16 of the handgrips. At each comer of the body of the apparatus are non-slip pads 18. In order to remove the handgrips 12 from the sockets 14 simply pull the handgrips 12 away from the body of the apparatus. To replace the handgrips slot the shafts back into the sockets 14. The spacings between any two adjacent sockets 14 will be equidistant, this distance being the same as the width 20 between the two shafts 16 of the handgrip 12 thus allowing any number of permutations of handgrip 12 position. The handgrips 12 can be stored when not in use in the recesses 22 in the body of the platform. The part of the handgrip that will be in contact with hands 24 will be covered in non-slip foam.
An adjustable press-up apparatus comprising a platform (10), two hand grips (12) and co-operating locating means (14, 16) provided respectively on said platform (10) and on said hand grips (12) to enable each said handgrip (12) to be located at a selected one of a plurality of positions on said platform (10).
2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said co operating locating means comprise a plurality of locating sockets (14) provided on said platform (10) and locating shafts (16) carried on said hand grips (12) shaped to be located in selected ones of said locating sockets (14) 3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein each said hand grip (12) is generally U-shaped, having said locating shafts (16) provided one at each end thereof.
4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein a plurality of said locating sockets (14) are provided on said platform (10), arranged in lines the spacing between which corresponds to the distance (20) between said locating shafts (16).
5. An apparatus according to claim 2, 3 or 4, wherein said locating sockets (14) and said locating shafts (16) are so shaped as to prevent rotation of said locating shafts (16) in said locating sockets (14).
6. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein slots are provide in said sockets (14) to co-operate with splines formed on said locating shafts (16) 7. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein said hand grips (12) are provided with non-slip hand engaging portions (24).
8. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein said platform (10) includes floor engaging means (18) defining an in-use orientation for said platform (10), with said co-operating locating means associated with said platform (10) being provided on the upper face of said platform (10).
9. An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said floor engaging means (18) comprise non-slip pads.
10. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein said platform (10) is so shaped as to provide storage recesses (22) for said hand grips (12) when not in use.
