Abstract

A semi-trailer for loading 20 or 40 foot ISO containers uses a single crane A which moves on a track (H, Fig 4) along the side of the trailer. The crane can be pivoted about point B by ram C from a rest position adjacent the gooseneck to be deployed as shown. Preferably the crane has a stabiliser arm G with ground support wheels. This gives the semi trailer several key advantages as it has the ability to pick up or unload both 20' and 40' containers without the need for any external lifting device, and if carrying two 20' containers, the semi trailer can rearrange the position of the two 20' containers. The semi trailer can also load or unload containers from a train or other semi trailer.

Description

2353518 ISO SEA CONTAINER SEMI TRAILER.
This invention relates to an ISO sea container semi trailer with a mobile crane attached.
Flatbed and fixed length skeletal semi trailers are used to transport ISO sea containers which mainly come in 20' and 40' lengths however there are several drawbacks to these semi trailers, firstly they are unable to load or unload an ISO sea containers without the use of an external lifting device (such as a crane) and secondly they are limited in both the size and number of ISO sea containers that they can carry and deliver and because of these limitations more advanced design solutions have been sought. Sliding and sliding bogie skeletal semi trailers allow the semi trailer to carry both 20' and 40' ISO sea containers and just like fixed length 40' flatbed or skeletal semi trailers they have the ability to carry two 20' ISO sea containers, however unloading the content of the second 20' ISO sea container is virtually impossible Semi trailers with two fixed cranes have the ability to lift a single ISO sea container on and off the semi trailer but they do not have the ability to load or unload two 20' ISO sea containers.
The essential difference of this invention is the inclusion on the semi trailer of a mobile crane stored whilst not in use on the gooseneck of a 13.6m. semi trailer. Although the crane is attached to the trailer it travels along the length of the semi trailer in a track. This embodies the semi trailer with several key advantages. (1) The semi trailer has the ability to pick up or unload both 20' and 40' ISO sea containers without the need for any external lifting device.
(2) If carrying two 20' ISO sea containers the semi trailer has the ability to change the position of the containers without the need for any external lifting device.
(3) The semi trailer has the ability to load or unload ISO sea containers from a train or other semi trailer without the need for any external lifting device.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: - FIGURE I shows a plan view of the semi trailer with mobile crane 'A' shown in the stored position on the front section of the trailer not used for the storage of containers. This is the position of the crane when the semi trailer is in transit.
FIGURE 2 shows a plan view of the semi trailer showing the position of crane 'A' after it has been pivoted about point 'B' by hydraulic ram 'C' and has traveled along track '11' (shown on FIGURE 4) FIGURE 3 shows a rear elevation of the trailer with crane 'A' in position to lift the ISO sea container. The crane is prevented from tipping by support wheels 'G' and support legs'D' I FIGURE 4 shows the side elevation of the semi trailer and shows crane W in position to pick up the rear 20' ISO sea container. Backwards and forwards movement along the length of the trailer is permitted by crane W traveling along track 'H' FIGURE 5 to FIGURE 9 show the unique way in which crane W is used to rearrange two 20' ISO sea containers.
FIGURE 5. FIGURE 5 'T shows the position of two 20' ISO sea containers 'X' and 'T loaded onto the semi trailer with crane W in the storage position on the front 'gooseneck' of the semi trailer. In FIGURE 5 'K' crane W has pivoted about point 'B' (shown on FIGURE 1) and traveled down track 'H' (shown on FIGURE 4) towards the middle of the rear container (. XJ.
In FIGURE 5 'L' crane W has extended and locked onto the top twistlocks of container 4X5 FIGURE 6. In FIGURE 6 M crane W has picked up and rotated container W through 180 degrees. In FIGURE 6 'N' crane W has traveled towards the front of the semi trailer still carrying container 'X' and places container 'X' on the ground opposite container 'Y' FIGURE 7. In FIGURE 7 '0' crane W has traveled empty along track 'H' towards the rear of the semi trailer and has turned back through 180 degrees. In FIGURE 7 'P' the empty crane W has traveled along track 'H' towards the front on the semi trailer and has locked onto the top twistlocks of container 'Y' FIGUME 8. In FIGURE 8 'Q' crane W has picked up container 'Y' and has traveled along track 'H' towards the rear of the semi trailer, placing container 'Y' onto the rear twist locks 'E' (shown on FIGURE 1) In FIGURE 8 'R' crane W has traveled empty along track 'H' towards the front of the semi trailer stopping opposite container 'X' FIGURE 9.
In FIGURE 9 'S' crane W rotates through 180 degrees and relocates onto the top twist locks of container 'X' In FIGURE 'T' crane W picks up container 'X' and turns back through 180 degrees placing container 'X' onto the front twist locks W (shown on FIGURE 1) In FIGURE 'U' crane W is shown in the stored position with containers W and 'Y' in the opposite position as shown in drawing T 2

Claims (1)

  1. The distinctive technical features that make this ISO sea container semi trailer different from those that already exist are: - (1) That the serni trailer contains a single crane 'A' that although attached to the trailer is mobile and able to move the length of the trailer along track 'H'.
    (2) That mobile crane 'A' is able to be stored on the front gooseneck of the semi trailer by means of pivoting about point 'B.
    (3) That mobile crane 'A' is able to support the weight of an ISO sea container by employing support wheels 'G' which reduce any moment that might be placed upon track'HI.
    (4) That mobile crane 'A' allows the semi trailer to load and unload both 20' and 40' ISO sea containers without the need of any external lifting device.
    (5) That mobile crane 'A' allows the semi trailer to rearrange two 20' ISO sea containers without the need of any external lifting device and all movements of crane 'A' shown in the drawings 'J' to 'U' in FIGURE 5 to FIGURE 9 are clamed to be unique (6) That mobile crane 'A' allows the semi trailer to be able to load or unload both 20' and 40' ISO sea containers from either a train or another semi trailer without the need of any external lifting device.
