[Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (iv)] [See also Group XXXII] In vehicles for transporting refuse bins and other containers means are provided on the vehicle for selectively drawing the bins &c. on to the vehicle at a number of points and for selectively lowering them from such points and means are also provided for hauling the bins &c. up a ramp or ramps and for tipping the bins to discharge their contents. As shown, the bins are provided with rear wheels 6 and a front caster wheel 6<a> and are adapted to be engaged by a hauling device 11 whereby they may be drawn on to the vehicle by means of a ramp 7. The hauling device 11 is mounted at one side of the vehicle upon a carriage 12 adapted to traverse to any selected position on a longitudinal girder 15 by means of rollers &c. and comprises an hydraulic cylinder 13, ram 28 and a sliding beam 23 which is spring controlled by springs 13b mounted in columns 13<a>. In the arrangement shown, two bins &c. may be simultaneously dealt with and accordingly a cable 27 has its two ends provided with hooks &c. 31 and passes through abutments in brackets and under pulleys 32 on the carriage 12, over pulleys 35 on the ram and under a centre pulley 37 mounted on the slide 23. To draw the bins on to the vehicle the slide 23 is wedged or locked and the ram lowered to permit the ends of hooks 31 to engage the two bins whereupon on raising the ram 28 the bins are drawn up the ramp 7 on to the vehicle which is provided with transverse rails or guides. To lock the bin in position an incline 45 is provided, up which the rear wheels are partially drawn and over a spring-controlled catch 44 provided with a horn 44<a> for this purpose. When the bins are released these catches 44 engage the wheel axles and cannot release them until the bins are again drawn slightly forward by the hauling mechanism. The front wheels 6<a> are locked by an arm 48. The ramp is engaged in a longitudinal groove 9 which also serves for locating the shoot or plate 10 over which the contents are discharged when the bins are tipped. In tipping the hooks 31 engage their abutments and movement of the ram therefore moves the slide beam 23, the abutments 24 of which engage abutments 21 on the ends of the bins and cause them to tip as shown in Fig. 3, lower abutments on the beam 23 engaging members 25 to limit the tipping and members 24b hooking over the members 21 to prevent disengagement. The hauling cylinder 13 &c. is pivotally mounted on the carriage 12 and is connected by flexible conduit 43 to telescopic conduit 41 on the side of the vehicle. This latter conduit is connected to the pump &c. by flexible conduit 40.
